What happened

The episode as NWS CLE wrote it up.

A strong area of deepening low pressure moved up the Ohio Valley on January 5th. This low moved across northwestern Pennsylvania early on the 6th and then continued rapidly northeast. At the same time, arctic high pressure settled over the Great Plains resulting in a very strong pressure gradient over the Upper Ohio Valley. Strong west to northwest winds ushered in an unusually cold and dangerous airmass and resulted in the coldest temperatures in northern Ohio since January 1994. Record low temperatures and unprecedented wind chills were reported throughout the region on both January 6th and 7th. Sustained west to northwest winds were as high as 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 45 mph on the 6th. By daybreak on the 7th, sustained winds had dropped to 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 30 mph but this provided only slight relief from the brutal wind chills. Temperatures during the evening of the 5th were in the 30s across all of northern Ohio. By daybreak on the 6th, readings were below zero in northwest Ohio and in the single digits and teens elsewhere. My midday, subzero readings were reported across all of northern Ohio with readings of 10 below or colder at many locations by early evening. Wind chills dropped to below negative 25 by mid morning in northwestern Ohio and by early afternoon in northeastern Ohio. Wind chills eventually dipped below minus 40 during the evening hours near Toledo and Findlay. Wind chills elsewhere were less than minus 35 degrees for a 10 to 12 hour period. Wind chills finally warmed above minus 25 during the early afternoon hours of the 7th. The coldest wind chill observed was -43 degrees at both Toledo and Findlay around 7 pm on the 6th. Mansfield, Lorain and Cleveland saw wind chills dip to minus 39 for several hours. All of the other observing sites saw wind chills fall to as low as minus 37. There were at least two cold related deaths reported across the area. All schools in the area were closed on both the 6th and 7th. All five of the major climate sites in northern Ohio established new record lows on January 6th. The old records at both Toledo and Cleveland were from 1884. The record lows on the 6th were as follows: -15 at Toledo; -13 at Mansfield; -11 at Cleveland; -11 at Youngstown and -10 at Akron-Canton. Record lows for the 7th included: -14 at Toledo; -12 at Mansfield; -12 at Youngstown; -11 at Cleveland and -11 at Akron-Canton. Low temperatures at the other automated sensors in northern Ohio were also -10 degrees or colder on both the 6th and 7th. High temperatures on the 7th were only in the lower single digits above zero.

GRADUALLY BUILD INTO THE OHIO VALLEY TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY THEN
SHIFT OFF THE NEW ENGLAND COAST THURSDAY.

FALLING TEMPS WILL BE THE BIGGEST WEATHER ISSUE TODAY AS ARCTIC AIR
SPREADS OVER THE AREA. WIND CHILLS WILL BE DROPPING WELL BELOW ZERO
FROM WEST TO EAST AS TEMPS FALL TOWARD ZERO AND WINDS OF 20 TO 30
MPH OCCUR. THE WIND CHILL WARNING STILL LOOKS IN ORDER FOR THE NEXT

THE SNOW WILL BE A TOUGHER ISSUE TO DEAL WITH DUE TO CHANGEABLE
CONDITIONS. THE NAM AND GFS DIFFER ON HOW MUCH MID LEVEL MOISTURE
WILL BE OVER THE NORTHERN PART OF THE CWA THIS AFTERNOON. MEAN LOW
LEVEL WEST FLOW SETS UP TODAY INTO TONIGHT SO A WINTER STORM WARNING
IN THE SNOWBELT MAY WORK OUT AS THERE SHOULD BE A DECENT LAKE EFFECT
SHSN ALONG WITH BLOWING SNOW AND WIND CHILL READINGS FALLING TO 20
BELOW OR LOWER LATER TODAY INTO TONIGHT.

OUTSIDE OF THE SNOWBELT...MOST OF THE ACCUMULATING SNOW IS OVER SO
WILL BE CONCENTRATING ON THE WIND CHILL WARNING. THERE WILL BE SOME
BLOWING SNOW BUT WITH LITTLE OR NO ACCUMULATING SNOW FALLING...WILL

NIGHT WAS MOVING QUICKLY AWAY FROM THE REGION. A LITTLE VORT LOBE
WAS MOVING THROUGH NE OHIO THIS MORNING CAUSING SOME SNOW.
ELSEWHERE SOME LIGHT SNOW OR FLURRIES AND PLENTY OF BLOWING AND
DRIFTING SNOW WAS OCCURRING. STRONG WINDS WITH GUSTS BETWEEN 30
AND 35 KNOTS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH TONIGHT. THE BEST CHANCE FOR
LAKE EFFECT SNOW THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT WILL BE EAST OF
CLEVELAND. SOME QUESTION WAS THE CEILINGS WILL DO AT INLAND
LOCATIONS LATER TODAY. AT THIS TIME WILL TRY TO IMPROVE THEM TO VFR
FOR THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT...SINCE THE FLOW IS WESTERLY.
