In addition to the extremely cold temperatures, northwesterly winds created dangerous wind-chill readings of -35 to -45. As a result, schools and numerous businesses closed for the day. Several locations also activated warming centers for those without heat. One person died as a result of exposure to the cold.

However, the accumulating snows should begin to taper off from west to east soon. That being said, winds gusting over 30 mph for much of the night will cause considerable blowing and drifting, and make for hazardous/difficult travel. Bitterly cold conditions still expected to follow the snow into midweek. Obviously, the storm and cold remain the main weather story and concerns of the next several days. SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wednesday: Surface low associated with winter storm is currently tracking northeast up the Ohio River Valley. The associated deformation zone and moderate to heavy snows is still tracking across the forecast area. The heaviest snowfall at the moment is currently along a Champaign to Shelbyville line. This heavy band of snow is expected to push into Indiana early this evening, with the snow shutting down across the entire forecast area by midnight. However, wind gusts over 30 mph for much of the night will continue to cause blowing and drifting problems. Plan to keep Winter Storm Warning going area wide until its expiration time at midnight tonight. However, depending on how bad the blowing/drifting is, it may need to be extended until morning. The cold surge that follows the storm is still on track. Actual temperatures will fall below zero later tonight and should not climb back above zero before Tuesday afternoon. Dangerous wind chills through the same period will remain in the -25 to -45 degree range, and the current Wind Chill Warning will remain as it is. Temperatures will moderate later Tuesday into Wednesday as the upper level flow trends more zonal, and the low level flow trends southerly. A disturbance approaching by late Wednesday may spread light snow into the area, but the bulk of the threat should hold off until Wednesday night and Thursday. LONG TERM...Thursday through Sunday: The above mentioned disturbance will produce a light snow threat Wednesday night and Thursday, but at this point any accumulations appear to be minor.
