What happened

The episode as NWS SGX wrote it up.

A large area of surface high pressure built in over the Great Basin, creating approximately 14 millibars of offshore flow from Salt Lake City to the coast of San Diego. This led to temperatures in the low to mid 90s at the coast and strong gusty winds over the mountain ridges and through aligned canyons and passes. Riverside and Orange County were primarily affected on the 4th, then San Diego County on the 5th as the wind shifted more easterly. No wind damage was reported, but the strong winds led to the spread of the De Luz Fire on the Camp Pendleton marine base.
