What happened

The episode as NWS HNX wrote it up.

Peak wind gusts during this strong wind event included northwest at 61 mph at Jawbone RAWS site at 1814 PDT on the 1st, 70 mph at the Class 3-16C RAWS site 10 miles west north-west of Inyokern at 2232 PDT on the 2nd, and northwest at 67 mph at Indian Wells Cyn RAWS site at 2013 PDT on the 4th.

Newspaper reports indicated a dust storm occurred in the Mojave area of the Kern County Desert during the afternoon of Friday, May 4. Local visibilities fell to near zero at times between about 1400 and 1700 PDT, along portions of Highway 14 north of Mojave, and along Tehachapi-Willow Springs Road, where the California State Police were forced to close portions of these highways due to the dust storm.

.DISCUSSION...LOW PRESSURE CENTER CROSSING SOCAL HAD LITTLE IMPACT
OVER OUR CWFA TODAY EXCEPT BRING SOME HIGH CLOUDS TO THE EDWARDS
AFB AREA. THE REST OF OUR AREA REMAINED CLEAR UNDER A DRY S/W
RIDGE. THAT IS ALL ABOUT TO CHANGE AS A DEEP COLD UPPER TROUGH
APPROACHES THE NORCAL COAST. THE TROUGH IS PROGGED TO MOVE ONSHORE
ON WEDNESDAY BRINGING MUCH COOLER TEMPERATURES TO CENTRAL CA ALONG
WITH BREEZY TO WINDY CONDITIONS OVER THE KERN MOUNTAINS AND
DESERTS WITH ONSHORE P-GRADS STRENGTHENING IN RESPONSE TO THE VORT
ENERGY ROUNDING THE BASE OF THE TROUGH AS IT MOVES BY TO OUR NORTH
WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH THURSDAY AFTERNOON. AM PLANNING TO
ISSUE A WIND ADVISORY FOR THE KERN MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS FOR THIS
TIME FRAME. ANOTHER CONCERN WITH THIS TROUGH IS THAT A FAIRLY
STRONG S/W ROUNDING THE BASE OF THE TROUGH WILL BRING A PERIOD OF
SHOWERY PRECIPITATION FROM TO THE NORTHERN HALF OF OUR CWFA
WEDNESDAY AND WEDNESDAY NIGHT AS IT WILL BE IN THE FAVORED LFQ OF
A 110KT 250MB JET. WILL MENTION CHANCE POPS FOR THIS PERIOD NORTH
OF FRESNO WITH A SLIGHT CHANCE IN THE FRESNO AND KINGS CANYON
AREAS. PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS WILL BE FAIRLY LIGHT AS HAS QPF/S
ONLY INDICATE UP TO A QUARTER INCH IN YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK AND
ONLY A FEW HUNDREDTHS OF AN INCH ELSEWHERE FROM FRESNO COUNTY
NORTHWARD. SNOW LEVELS WILL BE AT AROUND 7500 FEET WEDNESDAY
MORNING LOWERING TO AROUND 6000 FEET WHEN THE SHOWERS TAPER OFF
WEDNESDAY EVENING. A SHORT BREAK IS EXPECTED ON THURSDAY AS OUR
AREA WILL BE IN BETWEEN IMPULSES. HOWEVER...AS THE TROUGH MOVES
INTO THE GREAT BASIN ON FRIDAY...COOL AND MOIST CYCLONIC FLOW
BEHIND IT WILL BRING A CHANCE OF PRECIPITATION TO THE SOUTHERN
SIERRA NEVADA MAINLY NORTH OF KINGS CANYON. THE 12Z GFS IS NOT AS
DEEP WITH THIS TROUGH AS IT DROPS EAST OF OUR AREA AS THE 06Z RUN.
THE TROUGH IS THEN IT IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN EJECTING EASTWARD ON
SATURDAY ALTHOUGH THE MEDIUM RANGE MODELS AND ENSEMBLE PROGS HAVE
SOME TIMING DIFFERENCES. WILL KEEP TEMPS WELL BELOW SEASONAL
NORMALS THROUGH SATURDAY AS OUR AREA REMAINS UNDER A NORTHERLY
FLOW BEHIND THE DEPARTING TROUGH. MAJORITY OF THE MODELS INDICATE
A DRY RIDGE BUILDING IN OVER CENTRAL CA EARLY NEXT WEEK SO DAYS 5
THROUGH 7 LOOK TO BE CLEAR WITH A WARMING TREND. DS

&&

.AVIATION...MID DECKS WILL BUILD SOUTH THROUGH THE CENTRAL VALLEY
AFTER 00Z ALONG WITH GUSTY NW WINDS DEVELOPING BTWN 03-06Z
OVERNIGHT. ANOTHER SURGE OF NW WIND GUSTS IS LIKELY AT THE
TERMINALS WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. HAVE INDICATED WIND GUSTS TO AROUND
25 KTS ESPECIALLY AT KFAT. OTHERWISE...VFR CONDS LIKELY THROUGH
THE TAF PERIOD.

FOR SPECIFIC DETAILS...PLEASE REFER TO THE TAFS FOR
KMCE...KFAT...AND KBFL AND TWEB ROUTES 421 AND 423. JMB
