AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE NASHVILLE TN 300 PM CDT WED APR 17 2002 CURRENTLY...BIG H5 RIDGE OVER THE EAST COAST WITH A BROAD TROUGH OVER THE WEST. A STRONG H5 LOW IS OVER CENTRAL CANADA WITH SHORTWAVES OVER THE UPPER GREAT LAKES AND OHIO-TENNESSEE VALLEYS. THIS FEATURE IS KICKING OFF SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE MIDSTATE. AT THE SURFACE A MODEST SURFACE RIDGE IS CENTERED OVER THE GULF COAST WITH A LARGE SURFACE LOW OVER CANADA. A COLD FRONT STRETCHES FROM THE LOW THROUGH THE GREAT LAKES SOUTHWESTWARD THROUGH THE PLAINS. MODELS PUSH THIS FRONT SOUTHEASTWARD ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY WITH THE FRONT GOING STATIONARY FROM SOUTHERN WEST VIRGINIA TO NORTH CENTRAL ARKANSAS BY END OF THE DAY SATURDAY. MODELS PUSH A STRONG H5 SHORTWAVE THROUGH THE GREAT LAKES SAT NIGHT AND SUNDAY WHICH PUSHES THE COOL FRONT SOUTH OF THE AREA BY SUNDAY NIGHT. Locally heavy rains caused some creeks to swell. There was no flooding on any creeks or streams according to EMA officials. However, a 63 year old woman was swept away in her car while crossing a creek that partially covered a private road just off Big Marrowbone Road. She might have been unaware that the creek had risen to a depth of 3 feet, although she had crossed the creek earlier that afternoon. The creek was not out of its banks.
