HAWAIIAN ISLANDS SYNOPTIC DISCUSSION AND GUIDANCE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HONOLULU HI 4 PM HST SUN JAN 27 2002 SUMMARY...TEMPORARY RELIEF TODAY AND TONIGHT BUT UNSTABLE AIR MASS MAY AGAIN TURN PERIODICALLY WET MONDAY THRU WEDNESDAY. TRADE WINDS WILL ALSO TURN GUSTY FROM TUESDAY. DISCUSSION...HAWAII LIES BETWEEN TWO UPPER LEVEL TROUGHS...THE FIRST WHICH TRIGGERED YESTERDAYS RAINFALL AND IS NOW SAFELY EAST OF THE ISLANDS...AND THE SECOND WHICH IS FORMING WEST OF THE ISLANDS. THE LATTER WILL LIKELY BRING ITS OVERCAST OVER THE ISLANDS AND WILL HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO ENHANCE INCOMING SHOWERS LIKE ITS PREDECESSOR. THIS TROUGH IS EXPECTED TO CLEAR THE ISLANDS THURSDAY LEAVING MORE STABLE AIR MUCH OF THE SECOND HALF OF THE COMING WEEK. TRADE WINDS SHOULD STRENGTHEN AS A WEAK TROUGH..AT THE SURFACE THIS TIME..DISSIPATES. THIS SURFACE TROUGH HAS THUS FAR BUFFERED THE EFFECTS OF OUR STRONG HIGH TO THE NORTH.
