EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN DIEGO CA
230 PM PDT SAT JUN 23 2001
...SYNOPSIS...
MOISTURE IN SOUTHERLY FLOW ALOFT WILL BRING VARIABLE CLOUDINESS WITH A
CHANCE OF AFTERNOON AND EVENING THUNDERSTORMS IN THE MOUNTAINS AND
DESERTS SUNDAY. THERE COULD EVEN BE A FEW SPRINKLES WEST OF THE
MOUNTAINS SUNDAY. PATCHY COASTAL LOW CLOUDS AND FOG WILL BECOME MORE
EXTENSIVE EARLY NEXT WEEK AS LOW PRESSURE DEVELOPS ALOFT. THIS WILL ALSO
BRING SOME COOLING. OTHERWISE...DRIER SOUTHWEST FLOW ALOFT WILL KEEP THE
WEATHER FAIR MOST OF NEXT WEEK.
...DISCUSSION...
SE FLOW ALOFT BRINGING DEBRIS CLOUDS OVER OUR AREA FROM NOCTURNAL
THUNDERSTORMS IN NW MEX BUT MOST OF THIS DECREASED BY AFTERNOON. THERE
WERE ALSO PATCHY LOW CLOUDS/FOG NEAR THE COAST THIS AM. 12Z NKX SOUNDING
HAD A SURFACE BASED INVERSION AND SHOWED THE MID/HI LEVEL MOISTURE WITH
SE WINDS ALOFT. GRADIENTS TRENDING ONSHORE WITH 5-6 MB SAN-IPL.
THE MAIN FORECAST PROBLEM FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS WILL BE MOISTURE
MOVING UP FROM THE S. MOISTURE FROM THE SSE A BIT LIMITED TODAY AND
AFTERNOON CU NOT SHOWING MUCH VERTICAL DEVELOPMENT AND THERE WILL
PROBABLY NOT BE ANY THUNDERSTORMS TODAY. FLOW ALOFT TURNS SSW SUNDAY AND
BOTH ETA AND NGM CONTINUE TO BRING UP A LARGE AMOUNT OF MID AND HI LEVEL
MOISTURE FOR A BETTER CHANCE OF MORE WIDESPREAD MOUNTAIN/DESERT
THUNDERSTORMS SUNDAY AFTERNOON/EVE. AVN STILL INDICATES DRIER SW FLOW
ALOFT SUNDAY. STILL THINK ETA HAS BETTER HANDLE ON MOISTURE FIELD.
DISTURBANCE OFF OF SRN BAJA DRIFTS N AND MAY EVEN HAVE SOME WEAK
DYNAMICS IN THE FORM OF A VORT MAX MOVE THROUGH CWFA SUNDAY PM. WILL GO
WITH CHANCE POPS IN THE HIGHER MOUNTAINS AND SLIGHT CHANCE IN THE
DESERTS SUNDAY. WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED TO SEE SOME SPRINKLES W OF THE
MOUNTAINS SUNDAY...MAINLY S. MAX TEMPS WILL BE A TOUGH CALL SUNDAY BUT
INCREASED CLOUD COVER SHOULD RESULT IN SOME COOLING. UPPER TROUGH MOVING
INTO PAC NW SHOULD BRING DRIER SW FLOW ALOFT MONDAY WITH INCREASING
MARINE LAYER AND A LITTLE COOLING NEAR THE COAST. STILL SOME MID/HI
LEVEL MOISTURE LINGERING MON SO WILL INDICATE AFTERNOON CLOUDS IN
MOUNTAINS BUT NO THUNDERSTORMS FOR NOW.
LONGER RANGE PROGS NOT IN THE BEST AGREEMENT BUT GENERALLY CONTINUE
TROUGH ALOFT INTO MID WEEK FOR NIGHT/MORNING LOW CLOUDS AND A LITTLE
MORE COOLING. THE UPPER HI SHOULD REBUILD FROM THE SE TOWARD THE SECOND
HALF OF THE WEEK FOR SOME WARMING. HOWEVER...NOT ENOUGH SIGNIFICANT
CHANGE AND TOO MUCH UNCERTAINTY IN PROGS TO PUT UNJUSTIFIED DETAILS IN
EXTENDED.
.SAN...NONE.
