WESTERN NEVADA AND EASTERN CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RENO NV 245 PM PST TUE FEB 6 2001 EAST-WEST SURFACE FRONT ACROSS CENTRAL NEVADA THIS AFTERNOON. PREFRONTAL WIND HAS NOT DEVELOPED AS STRONG AS WAS EXPECTED. WIND PROFILER NEAR RENO SHOWS STRONG FLOW JUST ABOVE SURFACE BUT HAS BEEN DECREASING LAST 2 HOURS. UPPER SUPPORT FOR STRONGER WIND ALSO HAS DECREASED SO WILL DROP WIND WARNINGS/ADVISORIES BUT KEEP SOME GUSTY WIND IN THROUGH THE EVENING. SNOWFALL OVER NORTHEAST CALIFORNIA ALSO CONTINUES AS COLD POOL ALOFT SHIFTS OVER AREA. SOMEWHAT CONVECTIVE SO ACCUMULATIONS HAVE BEEN SPOTTY BUT SOME AS HIGH AS 5 INCHES IN LASSEN COUNTY. LIGHTNING DATA HAS BEEN OUT BUT SPOTTER REPORTS INDICATING SOME THUNDERSTORMS OVER NORTHERN WASHOE. VORT MAX NEAR TAHOE SHOULD MOVE SOUTHEAST THIS EVENING WITH TROUGH AXIS MOVING EAST SO SHOULD SEE DECREASE IN SHOWER ACTIVITY THROUGH THE EVENING. LIMITED MODEL DATA TO WORK WITH BUT CONSENSUS THAT SOME LINGERING MOISTURE OVER SOUTHERN HALF OF CWA EARLY TOMORROW WITH MODERATE NORTH-NORTHEAST FLOW OVER AREA SO WILL SEE DRYING TREND THROUGH THE DAY WITH STRONG COLD AIR ADVECTION MAINLY OVER TAHOE BASIN INTO NORTHEAST CALIFORNIA. ALSO NORTHERLY UPPER JET MOVES OVER NEVADA LATE IN THE DAY SO WILL KEEP BRISK WIND IN THE FORECAST. NEXT SYSTEM EXPECTED IN LATE THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY AND TAKES SIMILAR TRAJECTORY FROM GULF OF ALASKA. EASTERN PACIFIC RIDGE AMPLIFYS SO SHOULD STAY IN NORTHWEST FLOW INTO EXTENDED PERIOD WITH MODELS INDICATION SHORTWAVES DROPPING INTO GREAT BASIN THROUGH THE PERIOD. MRF DOES SHOW RIDGE SHIFTING EAST WHICH WOULD DRY PORTIONS OF EASTERN CALIFORNIA BUT WILL KEEP SOM$E THREAT OVER NEVADA SINCE TIMING IS AN ISSUE. DP .REV...NONE.
