INTERIOR CENTRAL CALIFORNIA FORECAST DISCUSSION NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY - HANFORD CA 315 PM PDT MON APR 9 2001 SATELLITE AND RADAR LOOPS SHOW SCATTERED SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS OVER MUCH OF THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY...AND THE SOUTHERN SIERRA NEVADA AND THE TEHACHAPI MOUNTAINS. SMALL HAIL HAS BEEN REPORTED AT PORTERVILLE AND MARIPOSA...AND A SPOTTER IN THE WESTERN TEHACHAPI MOUNTAINS HAD SNOW AT 3700 FEET. SATELLITE LOOPS SHOW THE UPPER-LEVEL LOW OFF POINT CONCEPTION AT THIS TIME. CIRCULATION AROUND THE LOW IS CARRYING CLOUDS OFF THE SOUTHERN SIERRA NEVADA INTO THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY...AND PRODUCING OROGRAPHIC SHOWERS OVER THE COASTAL RANGE. WIDESPREAD CONVECTION LIKELY WILL DEVELOP TOO LATE IN THE DAY FOR REMAINING SOLAR HEATING TO SUPPORT STRONG THUNDERSTORMS IN THE ABSENCE OF GOOD UPPER-LEVEL SUPPORT. SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL WIBND DOWN AFTER 03Z AS THE SUN SETS AND THE AIRMASS BEGINS TO COOL AND STABILIZE. SKIES WILL BE PARTLY CLOUDY...EXCEPT MOSTLY CLOUDY NEAR AND ALONG THE FOOTHILLS...TUESDAY AS THE LOW PULLS INTO ARIZONA. A SHORT-WAVE DROPS INTO THE GREAT BASIN TUESDAY NIGHT TO BRING A CHANCE OF SHOWERS TO THE EAST SIDE OF THE SOUTHERN SIERRA NEVADA...BUT THE ONLY IMPACT ON THE HANFORD WARNING/FORECAST AREA WILL BE A CHANCE OF SNOW SHOWERS NEAR THE CREST. Cold frontal passage and spring thunderstorms through Interior Central California during the afternoon hours resulted in low snow levels in shower activity. In the Kern Mountains, snow clogged Interstate-5 with 1-inch of snow caused a traffic death near Lebec.
