NORTHERN ARIZONA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FLAGSTAFF AZ
930 AM MST TUE AUG 07 2001

.SYNOPSIS...AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE WILL MOVE WESTWARD INTO
ARIZONA TODAY BRINGING AN INCREASE IN CLOUDINESS AND SHOWER
ACTIVITY...ALONG WITH COOLER AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES. THIS UNSETTLED
WEATHER WILL PERSIST FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS. EXPECT SOME WARMING AND
A DECREASE IN SHOWER ACTIVITY TO BEGIN BY LATE IN THE WEEK.

.DISCUSSION...VERY LARGE-SCALE CYCLONIC CIRCULATION IS BEGINNING TO
MOVE INTO THE SOUTHWEST THIS MORNING. THIS FEATURE HAS BEEN TRACKING
WESTWARD OVER THE SOUTHERN PLAINS FOR THE PAST FEW DAYS SO THE
TRAJECTORIES ARE NOT TYPICAL OF THE SUMMER MONSOON. NONETHELESS,
SOME GULF OF MEXICO MOISTURE HAS BEEN ENTRAINED INTO THIS SYSTEM SO
THAT WE SHOULD SEE SOME INCREASE IN DEEP LAYER MOISTURE AS IT
PROGRESSES WESTWARD. UPWARD FORCING IS EVIDENT ALONG THE LEADING
EDGE OF THIS SYSTEM AS SHOWN BY DIVQ FIELDS. CONVECTION HAS ALREADY
BEGUN TO DEVELOP THIS MORNING OVER WESTERN NEW MEXICO AND EASTERN
ARIZONA...ALONG WITH A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF CLOUD COVER. EXPECT
THIS AREA TO PROGRESS WESTWARD TODAY AND BECOME MORE WIDESPREAD AS
THE CONVECTIVE BOUNDARY LAYER HEATS UP. KFGZ SOUNDING AGAIN SHOWS
ONLY MARGINAL CAPE (AOA 450 J/KG) SO DO NOT EXPECT ANY PARTICULARLY
STRONG STORMS. MAIN THREAT TODAY WILL BE SOME GUSTY WINDS BASED ON
THE DEPTH OF THE DRY LAYER IN THE LOWER TROP. SECONDARY THREAT WILL
BE ISOLATED HEAVY RAINFALL AMOUNTS...BUT DO NOT BELIEVE THIS WILL BE
EXCESSIVE SINCE CLOUD COVER SHOULD SERVE TO MINIMIZE HEATING AND
REALIZATION OF CAPE POTENTIAL. UPDATES ON THE WAY. DB

.FGZ...NONE.

Two people died while hiking in a slot canyon when a flash flood washed them down stream. The two were long overdue from a hiking trip when searchers began looking for them. The last entry in a personal journal, dated August 7, indicated that they were going to hike up a slot canyon 16 miles southwest of The Gap. The canyon is marked by steep cliff walls that offer no escape to higher ground in the event of a flash flood. Their bodies were found over 16 days later.

The people who died

As the offices recorded each death: direct deaths were caused by the weather itself, indirect ones by something it set in motion.
