Hail and Damaging Wind in West Virginia, May 10, 2000
A cold front passed across the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia during the early evening hours of the 10th. Numerous thunderstorms erupted along and ahead of this front and many locations saw hail, frequent lightning, heavy downpours, and strong winds.

A cold front passed across the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia during the early evening hours of the 10th. Numerous thunderstorms erupted along and ahead of this front and many locations saw hail, frequent lightning, heavy downpours, and strong winds. Three forest fires were attributed to lightning strikes during the afternoon. In Jefferson County, downed trees and pea sized hail were reported in Shepherdstown. Quarter sized hail fell just west of town. In Berkeley County, dime sized hail fell in Martinsburg and Falling Waters. Nickel sized hail fell in Inwood and pea sized hail fell in Back Creek and Hedgesville. In addition, a wind gust of 54 MPH was recorded at Falling Waters, and ponding of water was reported on Hedgesville area roads. In Hampshire County, marble to quarter sized hail fell in Capon Bridge, Rio, and near Highview. An observer at Catoctin Mountain Park in Morgan County noted damaging winds and hail during the afternoon. In addition, gusty winds mixed down after the front passed, downing trees and power lines in Berkeley County.
