A cold front passed across Northern and Central Virginia during the early evening hours of the 10th. Numerous thunderstorms erupted along and ahead of this front and many locations saw several rounds of strong to severe weather.

A cold front passed across Northern and Central Virginia during the early evening hours of the 10th. Numerous thunderstorms erupted along and ahead of this front and many locations saw several rounds of strong to severe weather. In addition, gusty winds mixed down after the front passed and downed trees in Fauquier and Warren Counties. The first severe thunderstorm struck around 11:00 AM EDT in Alexandria, dropping quarter sized hail. Another thunderstorm struck Frederick County around 1:30 PM EDT, dropping marble to dime sized hail at Cross Junction which fell in enough quantity to cover the ground. The next round of thunderstorms began around 3:00 PM and continued through 7:00 PM EDT. In Loudoun County, quarter sized hail was reported in Hamilton, dime sized hail fell in Leesburg, marble sized hail fell at Dulles Airport, and pea sized hail fell in Purceville and South Riding. In Fauquier County, pea to marble sized hail fell in Marshall and Opal, and a tree was downed onto a power line near Warrenton. In Culpeper County, pea to nickel sized hail fell in the city of Culpeper. In Madison County, marble to walnut sized hail damaged vinyl siding just east of the city of Madison. A house nearby suffered $10,000 in damage from a lightning strike which blew out a bedroom ceiling and damaged electrical wiring. In Spotsylvania County, dime sized hail was reported in Lake Anna. In Prince William County, marble sized hail fell at Lake Jackson. In Manassas, a tree was downed by lightning and dime sized hail was reported. Pea sized hail fell at Falmouth in Stafford County. In Fairfax County, pea to marble sized hail fell in Crofton, Clifton, Centreville, Annandale, Dumfries, Fairfax Station, and Olney. Dime sized hail fell in Burke, Franconia, Lorton, and along the Capitol Beltway between Interstate 395 and the Wilson Bridge. Tree limbs were downed in Lorton. In Alexandria, marble to quarter sized hail was reported and a power line was downed at the intersection of Glebe Highway and Jefferson Davis Highway. Pea sized hail fell in Arlington.
