The lack of significant rainfall, since Hurricane Bret, produced moderate drought conditions by the first part of March across all of deep south Texas. These very dry sub soil moisture conditions forced many farmers to use irrigation. In fact, the Rio Grande Valley sugar cane acreage had shriveled from 43,000 acres in the 1998-1999 season to 27,000 in the 1999-2000 harvest year.Although March is climatologically one of the drier months in deep South Texas, on March 14, beneficial rains fell. Amounts ranged from 1 to 3 inches which brought much needed rain to the eastern part of deep south Texas. However, much of this beneficial rainfall missed the Falcon Lake Reservoir which supplies water to a large part of the lower Rio Grande Valley. Water levels for March were at 256.00 feet which declined approximately 6 feet from February. This is 44.30 feet below the normal conservation level of 301.20 feet.
