Heavy Snow in Maine, March 16 to 17, 2000
A strong cold front crossed the state late Thursday, the 16th, bringing an abrupt end to some very mild conditions which saw temperatures range from the 40s in the western mountains to the mid to upper 60s along the southwestern coast. The rain that accompanied the frontal passage changed to snow late Thursday as colder air moved into the state.

A strong cold front crossed the state late Thursday, the 16th, bringing an abrupt end to some very mild conditions which saw temperatures range from the 40s in the western mountains to the mid to upper 60s along the southwestern coast. The rain that accompanied the frontal passage changed to snow late Thursday as colder air moved into the state. An area of low pressure developed along the front over the southeastern states on the 16th, then moved northeastward late Thursday and early Friday bringing a moderate to heavy snowfall to much of the area. Snowfall amounts ranged from 2 to 6 inches in the mountains and foothills to 4 to 8 inches elsewhere, except along the extreme southwestern coast where 2 to 5 inches of snow fell.
