A mixture of rain, sleet, and snow began falling during the early morning hours on the 28th. Snow accumulations were rather light, with most areas receiving less than 1 inch. The exception was Clay County where some locations reported up to 2 inches. The precipitation changed to mostly rain during the daylight hours on the 28th but started to mix with freezing rain and sleet again in the nighttime hours. Although the precipitation was mainly light, trees were becoming coated with ice across higher elevations of Marshall, Etowah, and Calhoun. This lasted into the morning hours on the 29th. Several trees succumbed to the weight of the ice.
