Damaging Winds in South Carolina, April 27, 1994

Thunderstorms which produced widespread severe weather in Tennessee and North Carolina weakened considerably as they moved south out of the mountains and the wind reached severe levels in only a few places in the Upstate. They were still very strong, however, producing widespread wind gusts to 45 mph and copious amounts of pea- to marble-size hail. Severe weather in the form of damaging winds occurred near Landrum and Inman where large tree limbs and a couple of trees were blown down (one tree fell across a house), and north of Pickens where trees were blown across Highway 178. About 2,200 power outages occurred in the Spartanburg area. Near Tigerville a man was killed when lightning ran from a tree through the ground to his office - which was a converted bus without wheels. He was talking on the telphone at the time of the strike.
