A squall line developed during the mid afternoon hours in a very warm and unstable airmass. Hundreds of trees and power lines were downed as the thunderstorms generated damaging straight line winds.

Severe thunderstorms swept across eastern New York ahead of a cold front which moved east from the Great Lakes. There were numerous reports of trees and powerlines down, large hail and one tornado in eastern New York. The tornado touched down in Eagle Bridge in Rensselaer County. It skipped several times along a non-continuous path of 1.5 miles. Damage consisted of removal of slate roofs, tin roofs on barns removed, part of a silo demolished, and numerous trees up to four feet in diameter uprooted and snapped. The same storm which produced the tornado produced straightline winds near Hoosick Falls which downed trees and blew apart the screen at a Drive-In Theater and Hemstreet Park where part of the roof was blown off a house and a tree was blown onto a garage. Other damage from thunderstorm winds included trees which fell on a garage in Schaghticoke and a small chimney blown off a house in Malone. Hail as large as nickels fell in Stillwater and Vorheesville with dime-size hail reported in Colonie. At the Schenectady County Airport winds gusted to 58 mph.
