The earthquake occurred south of the Kuril Islands and was weakly felt along the entire southern part of the Kuril Islands. In Nemuro, Kushiro, Abashiri, and Urakawa its intensity was not more than I JMA. A fairly strong tsunami was observed on the coast of the southern part of the Kuril Islands and in Hokkaido and was recorded on tide gauges in Alaska and Hawaii.
