In the annual report of the Central Meteorological Observatory of Japan for 1893 it is reported that on June 4 at 2:27pm an earthquake was felt on Hokkaido in the Nemuro and Kushiro districts and on the southern Kurile Is.; it was especially strong on Shikotan. The area shaken amounted to approximately 125,000 km2; the magnitude of the quake as evaluated by the Japanese service was 6-½. The quake was accompanied by a tsunami, which at Shikotan reached 2-3 m. (reference #413)
