December 10, 1970, 04:34 UTC, 4 S, 80.7 W, magnitude 6.3 mb, 7.3 MS, depth 25 km. A destructive earthquake on the Ecuador-Peru border, south of the Gulf of Guayaquil; widespread damage in southern Ecuador. In Ecuador, the town of Alamor in Loja province is said to have been 90 per cent destroyed and there was severe damage throughout this province (at Macara, Cariamanga, etc.); 50 persons were killed; at Guayaquil, many persons suffered from nervous shock; the earthquake was felt with intensity III at

Quito, 450 km from the epicentre. In Peru, 32 persons were killed and 350 injured; casualties and damage were particularly heavy at Tumbes, Talara, Sullana, Querecotillo and Piura. The main shock was followed throughout the month of December by aftershocks of which the strongest reached magnitude 6 and of which at least 10 were of magnitude (m) > 5. (reference #1039)
