The three strong shocks of 24, 25 and 26 April 1957 caused widespread damage in the eastern part of the island of Rhodes, where 16 houses were entirely destroyed, 186 partially destroyed, 1,318 seriously damaged; there were 11 injured and the damage amounted to $276,000; Galanopoulos published photographs of characteristic destruction (Seismological Institute Bullerin, 1957). Among the areas which suffered were Istrios, Monolithos and Rhodes. In Turkey, along the mast near the focus, damage was particularly severe, being due in the main to the strongest shock, that of 25 April at 02.25 h : 80 per cent of the buildings were damaged or destroyed in the little port of Fethiye, where the casualties were 18 killed and 70 injured; other damage was reported at Golenye (40 per cent of houses), at Dalaman (30 per cent), at Marmaris (20 per cent), where 43 buildings collapsed (Pinar). The press reported the collapse of a mosque at Antalya, causing 7 injured, as well as the destruction of houses, and 4 injured at Milos. In all, 3,000 houses were made uninhabitable, and 5,000 slightly damaged.
