July 16, 1955 Earthquake: Samos, Soke, Aydin, Greece, Turkey

Reference #45 lists magnitude 6.75, 4 killed, 20 injured, and extensive damage on Samos Islands,. Greece, and in western Turkey.

1955 July 16, I=VIII+, H = 07 07 12, M+ 6.75. Soke-Ralat Earthquake. The intensities observed were as follows: VIII-IX at Agathonissi at -' the Samos Islands, VII at Chora, VII-VIII at Kontika Gonmeika Neon Karlovasi Loka, Kokkari, Pagonda's, VII at Paleokastron, Spatharaea, Tiganion and Mitilione, VI-VII at Karlovasi and Vathy, VI at Marthokampos, VIII at BaIae, VI at Kusadasj and Kocarli, V at Odemis, Cine and Bozdogan. It was felt as far as Bayindlr, Mugla and Gordes. (reference #1071)

1955 July 16, 07:07:10, 37.55 N 27.05 E, M= 6.9 (VIII, Agathonisi). The epicenter of the earthquake is in the Delta of the river Boughiouk Menteres. It caused damage in Balat as well as in Agathonisi and in Samos. In the island of Samos about 60 houses were destroyed, 200 were seriously damaged and 600 lightly, while 4 persons were injured. The largest intensities in the area of Greece were observed in Agathonisi (VIII), in Chora, Mauratzaeoe, Neo Karlovasi, Kodeika, Kokkari, Pyrgos, Goumeika, Leka, Pagoda (VII+), Palaeokastro, Statharaeoe, Teghani, Mytilinoe (VII) of Samos, in Leros, Aghia Marina, Xerokabos (VII) of Leros and in Kalymnos. A sea wave (tsunami) was observed at Teghani (Pythaghorio) and Heraeo, where its height was about 2m and entered the land at a distance of about 20m (Psilovikos, 1996 personal communication; newspaper Hellas, 27.7.1955).
