October 15, 1883 Earthquake: Ayvalik, Izmir, Cesme, Turkey

October 15, 1883, 15h30min, 38.4 N, 26.1 E, intensity X, magnitude = 7.3. A disastrous shock in the region of Izmir, at Izmir and Ayvalik several houses collapsed, particularly severe at the coast between Urla and Cesme where all houses were destroyed, casualties, at Cesme many houses were thrown down, destructive also in the villages Kritha, Alazata, Balcik, Serandumo, Korentzik, more than 120 victims, the earth cracked near Alazata, felt as far as Canakkale, Athinai, Syra, Andros, Thlra. Houses heavily damaged along the western coast of the Cesme peninsula, small damage at Izmir, epicenter probably between Cesme and Khios, at Khios only old houses collapsed. Aftershocks: Oct. 22, a damaging shock at Cesme; Nov. 1, 38.3 N, 26.3 E, intensity VIII-X, cracks in the ground near Pyrgi, a rockslide near Safdere, Karakoy ruined, a strong shock at Cesme and in the bay of Izmir.
