March 7, 1867 Earthquake: Izmir, Mitilini, Turkey, Greece

1867 Mar 7-16. Asia Minor, Mitylene, 3000 houses destroyed, Lesbos III (reference #1055)

1867 Mar 7, 18h. A destructive earthquake occurred on Island of Lesvos and in its vicinity at 18h15m-18h30omn March 7. The earthquake lasted for about.40 s in Myfilini, the main city of the island. A dense cloud of dust was raised owing to shocks. Numerous fissures formed in the ground including wide ones. Of the 2,500 houses, mainly of masonry, 1,500 d down completely, 700 houses could no longer be used for living. 150 were killed and many inhabitants were wounded. (reference #2130)

1867 Mar 7, 18:, 39.25N 26.21E, Lesbos. Twenty five seismic shocks occurred in the night from 23 to 24 February (old calendar) which were accompanied by underground sounds and destroyed the capital and many houses in Mytilene. In the capital, 2,498 houses were destroyed, 3,122 houses suffered major damage while in the country, 2,248 destroyed and 2,407 suffered major damage. It killed 550 people and injured 816 [...] In addition to the capital, the villages Molyvos, Petra, Mone Leimonos, Kallone and Parakoela were destroyed [...] Large damage were caused by the earthquake in the cities Adramytio (Edremit) and Aiyali of Asia Minor in the plain of Troy (reference #4408)

1867 Mar 7, 18 h, 39.25N 26.21E. [At Lesvos Island] More than 5,750 houses, built mainly by masonry were destroyed and 5,500 suffered major damage. The earthquake killed 550 people and injured 816 (Papazachos and Papazachou 1997) [...] The effects of the earthquake on the Turkish side were also important. Soloviev et al. (2000) reported that 148 houses were destroyed in the village of Yeni Foca, 12 people were killed and 18 people were wounded. At least 17 houses collapsed in the neighboring village of Eski Foca, one person was killed and three people were wounded. (reference #9640)
