1928, March 31, 00:47 UTC. 38.2 N, 27.5 E, magnitude 6.5, intensity IX (Torbali). The earthquake destroyed a number of houses southeast of Smyrne, in the Guma valley and in the plain Koutsouc Menteres, from Gazemir in the north up to CelIat in the south. The village Torbali was completely destroyed. In the country of Smyrne tens of houses were destroyed and hundreds suffered damages. Magnesia, Alasehir (Philadelfia) and Ousac (Temenothyres) were seriously damaged. 30 people were killed. Phenomena of liquefaction and cracks in the ground were observed. It was strongly felt in Chios, moderately in Ikaria and Samos and lightly in Naxos. It was also felt up to the sea of Marmara, Athens and Cythera (AOA, 1932; Sieberg, 1932b; Ambraseys, 1988b). It was followed by aftershocks the largest of which occurred in the same day with the main shock. (reference #4408)
