August 11, 1904 Earthquake: Samos, Patmos, Greece

On Aug 11, 1904, a magnitude 6.2, intensity VIII earthquake with an epicenter off the south mast of Samos caused widespread damage to the island. The main shock and its violent aftershock destroyed a number of farming settlements and the monastery of St. Triada, and triggered rockfalls that blocked the roads along the south coast of the island. Damage extended to the island of Patmos and to the Anatolian coast west of Soke. The shock was strongly felt as far as Santorini, Chios, Menemen, Odemis, Aydin and Chalki Is., off Rhodes. 4 people were killed and injured, and 540 houses on Samos were totally destroyed. In the early 20th century, an earthquake on 11 August 1904 (Fig. 4) with estimated equivalent moment magnitude Mw=6.1, is considered the most damaging event in Samos. The mainshock and its largest aftershocks caused severe damages to residential areas and monasteries, which included over 208 collapses, irreparable damages to public infrastructure and four fatalities. Damage in the north part of the island at Karlovasi and lower Vathy was minor with only one house collapsed and 50 damaged. (reference #13027)
