October 6, 1628 Earthquake: Hebei Province, China

October 6, 1628, Between Huai'an, Hebei Province and Tianzhen, Shanxi Province, 40.6 N, 114.2 E, magnitude 6.25, intensity VIII.

Huai'an: The earthquake took a heavy toll of

various structures in the city: All the brick and

earth parapets along the city walls, 15 gate towers

of different sizes, all decorations on newly built battlements, 2 newly-day moats, 5 brick and

stone mounds, 720 m brick-faced wells, 110

rooms in public buildings and storehouses, halls

and wings in government offices (totally or partly

collapsed) as well as many civilian houses. 41

persons and 2 domestic animals were killed.

In Dukoupu collapsed 8 gate towers, 1 km of

parapets, 10 brick mounds, 700-m side walls,

and 530 rooms in storehouses, temples and public

and private houses, 12 people and 79 domestic

animals were killed.

In Lixintunpu the destructions list included all

battlements and parapets, 7 gate towers, 19 stone

mounds, 120-m city walls, and 70-80% of all

temples, storehouses and public and private

buildings. The accident also claimed 7 lives.

In Chaigoupu the earthquake devastated 150-m

city walls and all battlements with gate towers.

A night watchman was killed.

In Huai'an city collapsed 221O-m city walls (in

eluding battlements), 370-m parapets, 4 gate

towers, 11 2-storied stores, 3 rooms in government

buildings and 35-m enclosing walls.

Wanquan: In Ximalinpu collapsed 8 gate towers,

900-m battlements, the south city gate and

ll00-m parapets, 71 mounds and beacon towers.

Xuanhua: In Shenjingpu collapsed 10-m parapets.

The tremor was felt in Xuanhua city.

Zhangjiakou : The parapets on Zhenluo Tower

collapsed.

The earthquake also struck Beijing, Tlanjin, Jinghai,

Renqiu, Hejian, Qjngxlan, Xingji (former site), Nanpi, Suning and Gucheng in Hebei Province; Datong and Shanyin (former site) in Shanxi Province.

Dozens of quakes occurred in succession, up to the late afternoon of October 12. There was another tremor on October 18. Injuries were reported from Xinpingpu, Tianzhen in Shanxi Province.
