.SYNOPSIS...
Heavy lake effect snow bands will move back southward tonight into
Sunday. Lake snows will focus east of the lakes Sunday afternoon and
evening, with very heavy accumulations focusing on Oswego County.
Otherwise, gusty winds will result in blustery conditions with areas
of blowing and drifting snow across the area Sunday and Monday.

...INTENSE LAKE EFFECT SNOW IN OSWEGO COUNTY SUNDAY...

Off Lake Erie...

The lake effect snow band has consolidated and strengthened as
expected over Lake Erie and Niagara County, and is now drifting
southeast towards the Lake Erie shore of Chautauqua and Erie
counties. Travel conditions will become severe in a matter of
minutes with very heavy snow and 40 mph gusts producing blinding
whiteouts.

Tonight, the expectation is that once the shortwave crosses the
region the steering flow will veer fairly quickly. This will
re-establish the lake effect band across Grand Island and
Niagara county around mid evening, between 8 pm and 10 pm. Once
established the band will start to move south fairly rapidly
and will likely not be in once location for more than 2 hours.
However, the intensity of the band will allow snowfall rates to
reach 3"/hr. Therefore, even though the band will be moving quickly
it is possible that additional amounts around a half foot or so
could occur across the Buffalo metro area between roughly 10 pm and
1 am.

The band will then settle across southern Erie county and the
western Southern Tier overnight and through the day Sunday. The band
will eventually become less organized, but because it will last
longer expect amounts to be in the 6 to 18 inch range. Greatest
amounts will be across higher terrain, and will extend further away
from the lakes due to the stronger winds, impacting Allegany county.
Little additional snow accumulation is expected for the Buffalo
metro area.

Off Lake Ontario...

Lake effect snow continues over northern Jefferson County and the
Saint Lawrence Valley this evening on 200 degree flow. This band
will remain in place through shortly after midnight, with snowfall
rates occasionally reaching 1" per hour.

Winds becoming more west-northwest later tonight and into Sunday.
This will push an intense lake band south out of Jefferson county
into southern Lewis, Oswego and far northern Cayuga counties.
The expectation is that this lake band will be as intense or
even more intense than the one that forms off of Lake Erie.
Snowfall rates of 3-5"/hour will certainly be possible. It
appears that this band will not move as fast to the south as the
one off of Lake Erie, so additional snowfall totals of 2 to 3
feet will be possible where the lake snows persist
(particularly across Oswego county).

Otherwise, some general snow showers across much of the area due to
the shortwave. Snow will be more powdery on Sunday, and this
combined with winds gusting to 40-45 mph will result in areas of
blowing and drifting snow anywhere with a few inches or more of snow
on the ground.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Some lingering lake snows east of the lakes, especially off Lake
Ontario where the longer fetch will support more of a response.
This event may provide one last parting shot of snow to the
Buffalo metro area late Sunday night as winds shift back to the
southwest.

Mid-level height rises occur across the Great Lakes region Monday.
Warm air advection will likely occur across the eastern Great Lakes
while winds back to the south-southwest. This will finally end the
significant lake snows, with just some lingering snow/rain showers.
The bigger impact on Monday will be the winds which will gust to 45
mph northeast of the lakes, and 35 to 40 mph inland. This will
result in some blowing and drifting snow, however the snow will be a
bit wetter since temperatures will rise into the upper 30s to lower
40s.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
A more zonal pattern develops Tuesday through Wednesday allowing for
dry and warmer conditions. Temperatures will likely top out in the
low to mid 40s each day. A southwest breeze between high pressure
off the east coast and low pressure systems crossing the northern
Plains. This pattern will hold. allowing for a tranquil Thanksgiving
across the region.

Attention will then become focused on next chance for widespread
precipitation. Not surprisingly there are model differences here. At
this point though, since the main low is expected to track across
the Great Lakes and warm front lifts the region, temps aloft should
mainly favor liquid precip. Some uncertainty on that farther to the
east though. Ran with non-diurnal temps and this kept a rain/snow
mix or only snow limited to those eastern areas with mainly rain
across western NY (higher elevations will see at least a mix of rain
and snow though) Main time of widespread precip would be late
Thursday night through Friday. ECMWF has been consistent with
showing event total QPF over an inch of liquid. Canadian_NH has had
similar if not more QPF, but not consistently. GFS has been
persistently muted with this event. Should note as it stands now,
amounts from the ECMWF and Canadian_NH are on the higher range of
most available guidance (aka 90th plus percentile on NBM output).
We'll continue to refine details with the system as it could bring
impacts in terms of winter and hydro. Plenty of time to look into
this further as we move into this week.

.AVIATION /03Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...
Heavy bands of lake effect snow northeast of the lakes will move
quickly south overnight as boundary layer flow veers from SSW to
WNW. Wind will continue to produce some blowing and drifting snow on
airfields through Sunday.

For KBUF/IAG...A band of heavy lake effect snow just northwest of
KIAG at 00Z will move back across airfield roughly in the 02Z-04Z
time frame with visibility down 1/4 mile or less in heavier snows.
The band will shift south of KIAG and move through the KBUF airfield
roughly in the 03Z-05Z time frame with visibility down 1/4 mile or
less in heavier snows.

For KJHW...Lake effect snow will stay away from the airfield through
midnight. The band of heavy lake effect snow drop south across the
area off Lake Erie should reach the airfield in the 05z-07z time
frame, with frequent periods of visibility 1/4 mile or less in
heavier snows. Behind the initial push of heavy lake effect snow,
light to moderate lake effect snow will continue through much of
Sunday with meandering bands of lake effect snow across the western
Southern Tier.

For KART...the airfield will be on the edge of heavier lake snows
through this evening, although some periods of snow showers could
bring periods of IFR visibility. A band of heavy lake effect snow is
expected to cross the airfield roughly in the 07Z-11Z time frame
with heavy snow and 1/4 mile or less VSBY.

For KROC...the snowband will primarily reside away from this TAF
sites, although the eastern end of the Lake Erie band may produce a
brief period of IFR around 04Z-06Z.

Outlook...

Monday....MVFR/VFR with a chance of rain and snow showers. Very
Windy with gusts 40 knots or greater possible.
Tuesday through Thursday...Mainly VFR.

.MARINE...
Latest guidance supports Gale Warnings for late tonight into Sunday
on both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, with sustained winds reaching 35-
40 knots on both lakes. Cold air advection may be able to increase
mixing depths over the lakes during this time. Winds will pick up
again on Monday, with another round of gales likely.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
Strong winds late tonight and Sunday will cause levels on Lake
Erie to rise some. Water levels will likely approach 6 feet
above low water datum at the Buffalo NOS station. Levels higher
than this can cause minor splash over in a few spots along the
Lake Erie shoreline.

.CLIMATE...
Buffalo airport received 16.1 inches of snowfall today,
breaking the daily record and bringing our monthly total 31.5
inches. This makes November 2022 the 2nd snowiest on record (the
snowiest is back in 2000 when there was 45.6 inches of snow).
It is possible that additional snowfall late this evening could
add to this record amount.

...A BAND OF HEAVY SNOW WILL BRING ABOUT A 2 HOURS BURST OF SNOW TO
WESTERN NEW YORK...

HAZARDS...A band of heavy snow accompanied by winds of up to 30 MPH
which can rapidly reduce visibility to less than a quarter of a mile.
This band of heavy snow is producing extremely heavy snow at the rate
of 2 to 3 inches per hour.

LOCATION AND MOVEMENT...At 1118 PM EST, a band of heavy snow was
along a line extending from near Byron to 6 miles southwest of
Westfield, or moving south of the Buffalo and Rochester metro
areas. The bans is moving south at 20 MPH.

LOCATIONS IMPACTED INCLUDE...
Jamestown, Batavia, Dunkirk, Fredonia, Hamburg, East Aurora, Darien
Lakes State Park, Letchworth State Park, Boston, Eden, Marilla,
Springville, Perry, Warsaw, Bennington, Colden, Orchard Park,
Westfield, Lakewood and Mount Morris.

This includes the following highways...
 Interstate 390 near exit 6.
 Interstate 90 between exits 57A and 61.
 Interstate 86 between exits 4 and 16.

SAFETY INFO...
Use extra caution if you must travel into or through this band of
heavy snow. Rapid changes in visibility and potentially slick roads
may lead to accidents.

Conditions can deteriorate rapidly in winter weather situations. Be
prepared for snow or ice covered roads. Slow down and allow extra
time to reach your destination.

...A LINE OF HEAVY LAKE EFFECT SNOW WILL AFFECT THE WESTERN
SOUTHERN TIER AND UPPER GENESEE VALLEY THROUGH 130 AM...

HAZARDS...A line of heavy lake effect snow accompanied by winds of
up to 35 MPH which can rapidly reduce visibility to less than a
quarter of a mile. This line is producing extremely heavy snow at
the rate of 2 to 3 inches per hour.

LOCATION AND MOVEMENT...At 1230 AM EST, a line of lake effect snow
was along a line extending from near Jamestown West to near Mount
Morris and moving southeast at 15 MPH.

LOCATIONS IMPACTED INCLUDE...
Jamestown, Fredonia, Geneseo, Salamanca, Dansville, Allegany State
Park, Letchworth State Park, Boston, Springville, Perry, Warsaw,
Avon, Colden, Westfield, Lakewood, Mount Morris, Gowanda, Pavilion,
Conesus and Falconer.

This includes the following highways...
 Interstate 390 between exits 4 and 8.
 Interstate 86 between exits 6 and 23, and between exits 27 and 28.

Rapid changes in visibility and potentially slick roads may lead to
accidents.
