Topeka, KS (KTOP), launched 12:00Z, 8.5 hours before the alert went out and 87 km from the middle of its area. This is the routine balloon launch nearest before it, the air the forecaster had in hand, not a measurement taken for the alert.

Mesoscale Discussion 0927
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0328 PM CDT Fri Jun 11 2021

Areas affected...western MO...eastern KS

Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 259...

Valid 112028Z - 112200Z

The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 259
continues.

SUMMARY...Intense embedded cores within a squall line straddling the
MO/KS border will pose a focused risk for gusts ranging from 60-70
mph (locally up to 85 mph) along the I-49 corridor through 5pm.

DISCUSSION...10-km CAPPI data shows a cluster of deeper thunderstorm
cores embedded within the southeast-moving squall line. It appears
the capping inversion observed on the 11am Topeka, KS raob has
largely thwarted development on the western periphery of the MCS so
far this afternoon. The forced ascent via the leading edge of the
cold pool (i.e., where it is deepest/strongest near the MO/KS
border) has overcome this inhibition and continues to promote/focus
where storms and the severe risk is greatest. The airmass over
southwest MO is characterized as very unstable per the 2pm
Springfield, MO raob (3000 J/kg MLCAPE). However, it appears
greater buoyancy is probably over southeast KS where OK Mesonet and
a few of the southeast KS observations show dewpoints in the 76-78
deg F range. The richer low-level moisture over southeast KS shows
6200 J/kg SBCAPE (implied 4500 J/kg MLCAPE) when the sounding is
modified for mid afternoon surface observations. Given the very
unstable to extremely unstable airmass south of the ongoing MCS,
expecting the severe risk to continue with swaths of severe gusts
ranging in the 60-70 mph range (locally up to 85 mph).
