The low that has dominated Western Alaska has started to weaken
as it moves into the left-entrance region of the jet, the trough
drives south, and the low starts to become vertically stacked.
This front associated with the low is still propagating eastward
as it makes its way through the Gulf of Alaska. While that low is
weakening, our focus shifts to a second low pressure system
beginning to ramp up along the western Aleutians and creating
gusty conditions and precipitation over the region.

Out east, the initial Bering storm has pushed further eastward,
and the associated front is beginning to push into the Northern
Gulf coast this morning. Recent radar imagery and observations
have confirmed that the precipitation and gusty winds associated
with this system have started to push into northern Gulf coast
this morning. While the first triple point low associated with
this front begins to decay over the Northwestern Gulf, the next
one begins to develop over the North Pacific under the influence
of upper level short wave.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models remain in fairly good agreement through this evening with
the overall evolution of the low currently over the eastern Bering
diving southeastward into the western Gulf, the timing and track
of the associated front and triple point low over the Gulf, and
the initial track of the North Pacific low moving over the western
and central Aleutians. Unfortunately by tonight, the models begin
to struggle with the strength and track of the next low to enter
the eastern Bering, as well as a potent triple point low
developing over the North Pacific and tracking northward somewhere
between the Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak Island on Tuesday.
Currently the NAM is the outlier with the low tracking over Kodiak
Island in this time frame, where the GFS and EC are both bringing
a deeper low over the AKPen. Forecast confidence is higher to
start off the forecast package, with regards to the current
impacts of the low currently over the eastern Bering and
associated front and triple point low. There is moderate
confidence with regards to high winds developing over the central
Aleutians with the incoming North Pacific low intensifying as it
tracks toward the eastern Bering. However, forecast confidence
begins to wane with regards to the track of this system as time
progresses throughout the night tonight, as well as with the track
of the triple point low that tracks in from the North Pacific on
Tuesday.

Monday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
Steady snow will spread across the Prince William Sound region
this morning as a front lifts northward across the northern Gulf.
Strong easterly flow out ahead of it will enhance snowfall
intensity over portions of western Prince William Sound. A Winter
Weather Advisory for blowing snow remains in effect through this
afternoon for Portage Valley and eastern Turnagain Arm. However,
the development of easterly winds overnight warmed temperatures up
to around freezing in this area, which will limit the amount of
blowing snow. As heavier snow moves in, still expect severely
reduced visibilities at times. With deep cold air sitting in the
Copper River basin, pressure gradients will remain tight between
the Copper Basin and eastern Prince William Sound which will keep
gap winds blowing through Thompson Pass and down to Keystone
Canyon. Thus, have issued a Winter Weather Advisory for blowing
snow for here as well. Conditions will deteriorate as snow arrives
this morning and continue all the way through Tuesday morning.

The next feature of interest is the developing low over the
southern Gulf, which will track to Prince William Sound late
this evening bringing another round of precipitation. Temperatures
will steadily warm as the front moves onshore this afternoon, so
when the low arrives expect rain or a mix of rain and snow along
the immediate coast, including Seward, Whittier, and Cordova.

Back behind this low the remnants of the powerful Bering Sea storm
will move into the Gulf as a rapidly weakening low, bringing
showers mainly to Kodiak Island and the Gulf. The upper trough
will lift toward Southcentral Tuesday, resulting in another round
of precip along the coast with continued warming of temperatures
and transition toward rain.

A much more powerful low pressure system will develop over the
North Pacific Tuesday and track near Kodiak Island before heading
to Bristol Bay. This will send a strong front northward across the
Gulf Tuesday and Tuesday night, and another batch of warmer air.
Thus, by late Tuesday expect predominantly rain along and near the
coast.

The bulk of precipitation with all of these features will be along
the coast. However, during times of weaker low level flow (and
thus weaker downslope drying) as well as when upper level short-
waves track overhead, there could be brief periods of flurries or
very light snow inland with little or no accumulation. Temperatures
will very slowly climb over the next couple days, likely climbing
to near freezing by mid week.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...
The strong area of low pressure that brought the strong winds and
blowing snow to the region yesterday continues to slide off
towards the Gulf Of Alaska this morning. This system will have
little affect on the area aside from maintaining some showery
precipitation to the region for today. Our attention then turns to
the next significant storm making inroads towards the region.
Models continue to indicate this low will also rapidly deepen to a
similar strength as its predecessor, once again stalling near the
Pribilof Islands, with another strong front pushing inland across
Southwest Alaska.

There a few differences which are significant with this storm.
The first being precipitation type. The last storm did a really
good job pushing modified marine air inland, helping to dampen out
the depth and degree of cold air. With another strong marine
push, widespread rainfall will be the dominant mode for most
locations. A bigger piece to the puzzle will be an unusually
compact low that ejects northeast from the north Pacific towards
Bristol bay, before getting absorbed into the parent storm, with
virtually all models showing a Fujiwara effect (one low rotating
around another). As this low moves up, some guidance has shown
hurricane force wind gusts develop near Bristol Bay. Given that
this is an unusual pattern/track for this low to take, we did
bump up the wind speeds but kept them short of warning criteria.
These systems will continue to wobble slowly southward through
wednesday, keeping showery type precipitation in the forecast
through then.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

As yesterday's storm continues to slowly weaken and slide off from
southeast of the Pribilof Islands towards the Gulf of Alaska, yet
another rapidly strengthening storm is already developing south of
Shemya this morning. This storm has even had a squall line with
lightning a few hundred miles south of the chain. Although no
lightning is expected to make it into the forecast area, what will
make it into the central Aleutians is more hurricane force winds.
This low will continue to strengthen from near its current
pressure around 980 mb, to near 944 mb just south of Saint George
Island Tuesday morning. It'll send another strong front eastward
through the next 24 hours and beyond, with widespread rainfall
developing. Following frontal passage, strong cold advection and
lowering heights aloft will help compress the air with more
hurricane force winds develop.

Further west across the western portions of the chain, gale to
storm force winds will develop, but they wont reach hurricane
force as this region is too far displaced from the better
dynamics. For the AKPEN north towards northern and eastern
portions of the Bering, gale and storm force winds will also
develop.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...
The models have come into much better agreement in the track of a
front that will move through the Gulf late Tue-Wed, which is now
expected to bring gale force winds into the North Gulf/Prince
William Sound, as well as strong winds through Turnagain Arm and
Thompson Pass. This front will also bring widespread snow (mixed
with rain near sea level) from the Eastern Kenai Peninsula
eastward into Thompson Pass. This snow, along with gusty winds
along the front is expected to bring areas of blowing snow,
especially to Thompson Pass where temperatures will remain much
cooler throughout the event. Over the Anchorage Bowl/Matanuska
Valley, deep southeasterly flow and downsloping will prevent
most, if not all of the precipitation from reaching the ground as
the front makes landfall Tue night, with just a chance of snow in
the area as downsloping begins to weaken on Wednesday.

Over the Bering on Tuesday, yet another storm force low will begin
to weaken over the Eastern Bering through Wednesday, however a
very active weather pattern is expected to continue into the
middle of next week as another gale to (potentially) storm force
low approaches the Western Aleutians late Wednesday. The good news
for the Bering Sea/Aleutians region is there is good agreement
that this system is will to slowly move through the Northern
Bering into next weekend, providing most of the area with a break
in the very active and progressive pattern Over the Gulf and
Southcentral, the typical setup of cold and dry conditions is
expected to continue until Saturday when there is reasonable model
consensus of a developing triple point low impacting the area for
the weekend.
