The nearest sounding before it

Davenport, (KDVN), launched 12:00Z, 11.4 hours before the alert went out and 177 km from the middle of its area. This is the routine balloon launch nearest before it, the air the forecaster had in hand, not a measurement taken for the alert.

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0924
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0624 PM CDT TUE JUN 14 2016

AREAS AFFECTED...PORTIONS OF SERN MN...ERN IA...WRN WI...AND NWRN IL

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 256...

VALID 142324Z - 150030Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 256
CONTINUES.

SUMMARY...MAINLY A DAMAGING WIND THREAT CONTINUES ACROSS WW 256. AN
ISOLATED TORNADO ALSO REMAINS POSSIBLE.

DISCUSSION...LATEST RADAR IMAGERY AS OF 2320Z DEPICTS A LINE OF
STRONG TO SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS MOVING EWD ACROSS SERN MN AND NERN
IA. DAMAGING WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO BE THE MAIN THREAT WITH THIS
ACTIVITY AS IT MOVES EWD INTO WRN WI. SOME STRONGER CORES HAVE BEEN
NOTED IN CNTRL IA MOVING INTO WRN PORTIONS OF WW 256...AND THESE
THUNDERSTORMS MAY HAVE A LARGE HAIL THREAT IN ADDITION TO SOME
STRONG/GUSTY WINDS. A BROKEN BAND OF CONVECTION ACROSS E-CNTRL IA
INTO NWRN IL IS SITUATED NEAR A SFC WARM FRONT...AND THIS ACTIVITY
MAY POSE THE BEST CHANCE FOR AN ISOLATED TORNADO IN THE SHORT TERM
GIVEN BACKED SELY SFC WINDS...SLIGHTLY MORE FAVORABLE STORM
MODE...AND EFFECTIVE SRH GENERALLY AROUND 100-150 M2/S2. ALL OF THE
AFOREMENTIONED ACTIVITY WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE A SEVERE THREAT UNTIL
IT REACHES/MOVES ACROSS THE WARM FRONT AND BECOMES ELEVATED.
FINALLY...A LOCAL EXTENSION IN AREA SWD TO INCLUDE MORE OF SERN IA
AND W-CNTRL IL MAY BE NEEDED TO ACCOUNT FOR ONGOING STRONG/SEVERE
THUNDERSTORMS NEAR DAVENPORT IA.
