MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0779
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0521 PM CDT THU MAY 10 2012

AREAS AFFECTED...WEST AND SOUTHWEST TX

CONCERNING...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 272...

VALID 102221Z - 102315Z

THE SEVERE WEATHER THREAT FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 272
CONTINUES.

SUMMARY...AN ISOLATED SEVERE THREAT SHOULD CONTINUE ACROSS PARTS OF
WEST TX EARLY THIS EVENING. LARGE HAIL AND ISOLATED WIND DAMAGE WILL
BE POSSIBLE WITH THE STRONGER CELLS. A LOCAL WWD EXTENSION MAY BE
NEEDED BY WFO SAN ANGELO FOR WW 272.

DISCUSSION...WATER VAPOR IMAGERY CURRENTLY SHOWS AN UPPER-LEVEL LOW
OVER WEST TX. STRONG THUNDERSTORMS ARE ONGOING TO THE EAST OF THE
LOW ALONG AN AXIS OF MODERATE INSTABILITY /MLCAPE 1000 TO 1500 J/KG/
EXTENDING NWWD INTO WEST TX. THE ENVIRONMENT IS CHARACTERIZED BY
MODERATE TO STRONG DEEP LAYER SHEAR AND STEEP MID-LEVEL LAPSE RATES.
IN ADDITION...TEMPS ALOFT ASSOCIATED WITH THE UPPER-LEVEL LOW ARE IN
THE -12C TO -14C RANGE SUGGESTING LARGE HAIL WILL BE LIKELY WITH THE
STRONGER CORES. WIND DAMAGE COULD ALSO OCCUR ESPECIALLY IF A LINE
CAN ORGANIZE AS SOME MODEL FORECASTS SUGGEST. SHORT-TERM TRENDS
SUGGEST THE CONVECTION WILL MOVE INTO PARTS OF CROCKETT COUNTY OVER
THE NEXT HOUR. THEREFORE...WW 272 MAY NEED TO BE LOCALLY EXTENDED
WWD.
