EF0 tornado, Anna to Montra, Ohio, March 11, 2026

From Anna to Montra, this EF0 tornado ran 1.9 miles across Shelby County on March 11, 2026, touching down at 10:17 AM EDT and reaching 60 yards wide. It killed nobody.

Preliminary. This is NWS ILN's damage survey, filed in the Damage Assessment Toolkit as Botkins. The rating, the path and the casualties are the survey's and can change while it is revised. The Storm Prediction Center compiles the official record of 2026 from these surveys and publishes it in the spring of 2027; this page moves to that tornado's permanent address when it does.

The rating scale

Tracks are drawn in the color of the rating. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates the damage rather than measuring the wind: the speeds are what that damage is taken to imply.

  1. EF065 to 85 mphthis tornado

Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

  2. EF186 to 110 mph

Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mph

Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the survey found

The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-0 tornado north of Anna / south of Botkins in Shelby County, Ohio. This tornado occurred during the morning hours on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

The first evidence of tornadic damage from this tornado was surveyed on Wenger Road. Two barns on one property on Wenger Road were destroyed. The debris from the barns was scattered in multiple directions, providing evidence of a tornadic circulation. Numerous trees were also uprooted or snapped, and a residence had minor roof damage. Winds at this location were estimated to be around 80 mph.

To the east of Wenger Road, additional damage was noted on Amsterdam Road. A roof was lifted off a barn, and several trees were uprooted. On County Road 25 A, more trees were uprooted and a garage was damaged. It appears this particular tornado ended near or just west of I-75. The tornadic damage lines up with a weak circulation observed on NWS and FAA radar.

The National Weather Service would like to thank the Shelby County Emergency Management Agency for their assistance with this damage survey.

Written by NWS ILN in the NWS Damage Assessment Toolkit. A survey is revised as better evidence arrives.

The damage survey

14 damage points were recorded along this path by NWS ILN, in the Damage Assessment Toolkit the survey teams carry. The strongest indicator was rated EF0. The highest wind the damage implies is 85 mph.

  • Barn destroyed, debris blown to east (south side of US-33)
  • Barn destroyed, debris in field behind residence (north side of US-33).
  • Pole barn damage. Insulation blown into field to northeast.
  • Semi-trucks overturned at mile marker 101 on I-75.

Survey points are preliminary and are the raw material the published rating was built from. Source: NWS Damage Assessment Toolkit.

What the Weather Service recorded

A low pressure system moved through the Great Lakes region, prompting showers and thunderstorms. Some storms produced damaging winds and heavy rainfall, leading to instances of flooding.

The first evidence of tornadic damage was on Wenger Road, where two barns were destroyed. Numerous trees were uprooted or snapped and a residence had minor roof damage. Additional damage was noted along Amsterdam Road where a roof was lifted off of a barn and several trees were uprooted. Farther east, more trees were uprooted and a garage was damaged along County Road 25A. The tornado dissipated just west of I-75.

The first tornadic damage occurred along Wells Road, just west of County Road 25A, where a RV was overturned and a pair of properties sustained siding damage. Additionally, two trees were downed along County Road 25A. The tornado then crossed I-75, where it blew two tractor trailers over onto their sides. The tornado then crossed Highland Kies Road, where it blew down a tree, destroyed a shed, and blew shingles off of a residence and garage. Finally, the tornado destroyed a large outbuilding on Sidney Freyburg Road south of Amsterdam Road before dissipating.

What this means

Ratings are the survey's, read off the damage rather than measured; the rating scale is above. A survey can be revised, so the rating, the path and the casualties can all still change.
