EF1 tornado, Coryville to La Grange, Ohio, May 24, 2017

From Coryville to La Grange, this EF1 tornado ran 3.0 miles across Lawrence County on May 24, 2017, touching down at 8:11 PM EDT and reaching 100 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $100,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

    Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

Showers and thunderstorms developed in a weak instability but strong shear environment across Central Kentucky on the afternoon of the 24th. The showers and storms moved into Southeast Ohio just before sunset. There was very little lighting, but one low-topped supercell, which had persistent rotation, was able to spin up a brief tornado.

Many trees were damaged along a tornado path, which started at the Court House in Ironton, and extended to the north-northeast for about 3 miles. Several outbuildings were destroyed, and the porch roof was removed from a house. The NWS Storm Survey team estimated the tornado had maximum winds of 110 MPH.
