EF0 tornado, Willow Springs to Englewood, Illinois, July 15, 2024

From Willow Springs to Englewood, this EF0 tornado ran 0.4 miles across Cook County on July 15, 2024, touching down at 9:45 PM CDT and reaching 125 yards wide. It killed nobody.

The rating scale

Tracks are drawn in the color of the rating. The Enhanced Fujita scale rates the damage rather than measuring the wind: the speeds are what that damage is taken to imply.

  1. EF065 to 85 mphthis tornado

Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

  2. EF186 to 110 mph

Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mph

Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

A derecho moved across northern Illinois during the evening of July 15th producing widespread wind damage and 30 tornadoes in northeast Illinois. One of these tornadoes crossed into northwest Indiana. At the height of the storms, 430,000 customers lost power with some power not restored for four days, on July 19th.

A tornado with estimated peak winds of 90 mph touched down near the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal immediately north of Interstate 294. It moved across a mobile home park where it caused damage to trees and homes north of Park Avenue. The tornado crossed Garden Lane where several large, healthy trees were either uprooted or snapped. Minor shingle, siding and fascia damage to homes also occurred. A greenhouse was blown about 75 feet to the north. The tornado was likely at peak intensity in this area. The tornado continued through a cemetery and broadened considerably as it ended east of Roberts Road near 74th Place.

A tornado with estimated peak winds of 85 mph touched down near Harlem Avenue and 135th Street and moved nearly due east, paralleling 135th Street. Numerous tree limbs were blown down along trails in a forest preserve south of 135th Street. Significant tree damage occurred near 135th Street and Central Avenue. Minor roof damage to a home and a large uprooted tree occurred near Laramie Avenue. Tree damage occurred during the rest of the path of the tornado, which crossed Interstate 294 and then ended near Mozart Street and 135th Street.

A brief tornado with estimated peak winds of 85 mph touched down just north of 159th Street near Rob Roy Drive. In addition to tree damage, minor roof and fascia damage occurred to some homes, primarily confined to areas along Brookwood and Arroyo Drives. One home just west of Arroyo Drive suffered damage to siding, gutters, a vinyl fence and a broken window. The tornado ended near Terrace Drive and 158th Place.

A tornado with estimated peak winds of 100 mph touched down near Kedzie Avenue and 194th Street. Extensive tree damage occurred near Hawthorne Lane including large trees snapped and other trees uprooted. The tornado began moving northeast, crossing Flossmoor Road with more trees uprooted and snapped near Hagen Lane. Trees were snapped south of Willow Road and some homes suffered minor roof damage as well as had windows blown out. Tree damage continued along the path and then the tornado partially ripped off the roof to the Thornton Recreation Center on Laura Lane. Trees were snapped and utility poles were blown down in this area along with a large tree limb that fell onto a house. The tornado ended near Interstate 294 and Chicago Road.

A brief tornado with estimated peak winds of 80 mph touched down near 169th Street and Crawford Avenue. The tornado produced tree damage along its path, which brought down power lines. A large pine tree was uprooted on Briargate Drive, which fell onto a house. The tornado ended just after this location, just south of 167th Street.

A tornado with estimated peak winds of 90 mph touched down in the southwest side of Marquette Park, where several willow trees were snapped near their bases. A concentrated corridor of tree damage continued northeast across the park and golf course. The tornado was likely at peak intensity as it moved through the park. Significant tree damage occurred near 66th Street and Artesian Street where residential streets were blocked due to numerous tree limbs and trees down. At least one light pole was broken. The tornado turned to the east and produced mainly tree damage when it crossed William Ogden Park, where some healthy trees were snapped. The tornado ended just northeast of the park, near May Street and 64th Street.

From NOAA NCEI's Storm Events Database, the narrative the local forecast office wrote for Storm Data.

What forecasters said that day

.MESOSCALE...
Issued at 546 PM CDT Mon Jul 15 2024

Explosive severe thunderstorm development has taken place across
Iowa, with storm tops exceeding 65kft. Special soundings from
DVN and ILX both show extreme instability and moderate deep
layer shear, though sufficient shear to support storm scale
organization in light of the extreme instability.

Already seeing signs of amalgamating cold pools/downdrafts with
convection over Iowa with radar showing some developing rear
inflow jets. The evolution of the convection so far continues to
fit the expectations for today with evolution to QLCS well
underway. As cold pool strengthens, would anticipate a QLCS to
begin accelerating eastward with increasing damaging wind threat
as storms approach and cross the Mississippi River.

Strengthening low level jet this evening over northern Illinois
should result in a ramping up of low level shear and coincident
increasing threat of QLCS tornadoes with bowing segments and/or
line embedded supercells. Given the shear/instability combo,
threat is certainly there for a large number of QLCS tornadoes
this evening over northern IL.

Recent satellite/radar imagery shows some cells developing over
far northern Winnebago County near the Wisconsin line. This
could be the beginnings of a "warm air advection" wind ahead of
the Iowa QLCS, which if it is and continues to fill in this
could result in a potential significant/high end flash flood
threat in our CWA if storms drift south of the IL/WI border.
Given the vulnerability of the Rockford area due to nearly 10"
of rain over the past 48 hours, this will be something that we
will be monitoring extremely closely.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 247 PM CDT Mon Jul 15 2024

Through Tuesday Night:

Showers and storms may linger into the morning hours, especially
across the southern portion of the CWA. There is a chance that
the cold front associated with the storms may set up in a west
to east fashion and stall out across the southern portion of the
area, which could lead to storms persisting into the evening
over this area. However, most of the 12Z CAMs show this scenario
playing out south of the area. Although the chances of this
seem to be on the lower side, did include chance PoPs across the
southern CWA through Tuesday afternoon to account for this
possibility.

With the cold front moving through the area, Tuesday will be
cooler than today with temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s.
Dew points will still be around 70 degrees, so it may still feel
a bit on the humid side, but peak heat indices will only be in
the 90-95 degree range.

Carothers

Wednesday through Monday:

The main upper trough axis is expected to shift east across the
forecast area Wednesday. Despite steep low-level lapse rates
depicted in forecast soundings, warm mid-level temps (700-600
mb) look to provide a capping inversion with respect to surface
based convective development. Therefore, forecast for Wednesday
is dry at this point. Broad surface high pressure then builds
across the area through the end of the week, setting the stage
for a well-deserved period of dry and seasonably mild but less-
humid weather conditions, downstream of a high-amplitude upper
ridge which develops over western North America.

.AVIATION /00Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z WEDNESDAY/...
Issued by National Weather Service Gaylord, MI
643 PM CDT Mon Jul 15 2024

The primary aviation weather concerns for the 18Z TAF period include:

* Severe squall line this evening

* Period of MVFR ceilings (at least?) ahead of and behind a cold
front expected to pass through in the 12z-18z time frame.

QLCS has developed as expected and pressing across the Mississippi
River as of this writing. Storms expected to reach KRFD around 01z
and into the Chicago metro in the 02-03z time frame with strong wind
gusts in excess of 40 knots anticipated. Still looks to be a period
of MVFR ceilings in the wake of this evening's convection into
Tuesday morning though flight conditions are expected to improve
toward midday with a wind shift to the northwest behind a cold front
(and likely a lake breeze impacting KORD/KMDW during the afternoon).

What this means

Ratings are the survey's, read off the damage rather than measured; the rating scale is above. Tornado counts rise through the record as reporting improved, so a year in the 1950s is not comparable with one today except for the strongest tornadoes, which were always noticed.
