EF1 tornado, Sangamon to Oakley, Illinois, May 25, 2011

From Sangamon to Oakley, this EF1 tornado ran 1.5 miles across Macon County on May 25, 2011, touching down at 7:39 AM CDT and reaching 75 yards wide. It killed nobody, and did $100,000 of property damage.

The rating scale

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

What the Weather Service recorded

Strong thunderstorms developed along an advancing warm front between 2 AM and 9 AM on May 25th. Some of the storms became severe, producing scattered wind damage from Morgan County northeastward to Tazewell County. Other damage was noted across Champaign, Vermilion, and Douglas counties. In addition, two brief tornadoes touched down in eastern Macon County.

A tornado touched down in eastern Macon County about 6 miles east-northeast of Decatur at 7:35 AM CDT. The tornado travelled 1 mile to the northeast, damaging grain bins and outbuildings before lifting at 7:37 AM CDT.

A tornado touched down in eastern Macon County about 1.7 miles east of Oakley at 7:39 AM CDT. The tornado travelled 1.5 miles to the northeast, damaging grain bins and outbuildings before lifting at 7:42 AM CDT.
