EF2 tornado, Verbena to Mountain Creek, Alabama, March 2, 2012

From Verbena to Mountain Creek, this EF2 tornado ran 28.3 miles across Chilton and Coosa counties on March 2, 2012, touching down at 10:01 PM CST and reaching 700 yards wide. It killed nobody.

The rating scale

    Light damage. Surface peeled off some roofs, gutters and siding damaged, branches broken, shallow-rooted trees pushed over.

    Moderate damage. Roofs badly stripped, mobile homes overturned or badly damaged, exterior doors lost, windows broken.

  3. EF2111 to 135 mphthis tornado

    Considerable damage. Roofs torn off well-built houses, frame homes shifted on their foundations, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, cars lifted off the ground.

  4. EF3136 to 165 mph

    Severe damage. Whole stories of well-built houses destroyed, large buildings badly damaged, trains overturned, trees debarked, heavy cars lifted and thrown.

  5. EF4166 to 200 mph

    Devastating damage. Well-built houses leveled, structures with weak foundations moved some distance, cars thrown and large missiles generated.

  6. EF5over 200 mph

    Incredible damage. Strong frame houses swept off their foundations, car-sized missiles thrown more than 100 meters, steel-reinforced concrete badly damaged, high-rise buildings deformed.

  7. Unrated

    The survey recorded a tornado but could not put a number on it, most often because it crossed open country and damaged nothing a rating can be read from.

What the Weather Service recorded

On March 2, 2012, a strong cold front moved through Central Alabama. Severe thunderstorms developed along and ahead of this front. Some of these thunderstorms were supercells. These supercells produced damage across southern and eastern sections of the area. Damaging straight line winds, tornadoes, large hail and localized flooding occurred with this event.

A tornado touched down just west of Interstate 65, south of exit 200 in Chilton County. Here, a few trees were snapped or uprooted. It quickly strengthened and grew to its maximum width of 700 yards as it crossed County Road 502. The tornado moved east across US Highway 31 near the intersection with County Road 526, 1.5 miles south of Verbena. The tornado intensified to 125 mph and destroyed one home and caused significant damage to another, as well as mowing down hundreds of trees around the two homes. The tornado continued to snap and uproot trees as it neared County Road 524, where it also destroyed two single-wide manufactured homes and caused significant damage to two homes. A total of thirteen homes were damage or destroyed in and around Verbena. The tornado then crossed into Coosa County, before it eventually lifted.
