An active stretch of weather took shape across West Virginia from June 10th to the 12th amid several passing disturbances. Beginning on the morning of the 10th, overnight thunderstorm complexes across the Ohio Valley spilled into the state just after sunrise, containing heavy downpours. This resulted in high water issues across isolated spots in Lincoln, Putnam, and Kanawha Counties through the late morning hours before the departure of the first upper level disturbance.
A brief reprieve from the evening of the 10th to the morning of 11th was quickly interrupted by an approaching cold front that promoted diurnally showers and thunderstorms for the next two days. Thunderstorms developed early in the afternoon on June 11th across north-central West Virginia and tracked eastward into the mountains. Damaging winds associated with storms resulted in a swath of downed trees and power lines in these areas before dissipating with the loss of daytime heating. A similar setup took place the next day as the front slid through the forecast area, with storms developing around midday, this time across portions of central and southern West Virginia. More tree and power line damage occurred as a result, along with one instance of one inch hail. The cold front slipped through the entire area by the evening of June 12th, mitigating further showers and storms in the state.

Localized flash flooding is possible with convection over southern portions of the forecast area early this morning. There are slight Risks for Severe Thunderstorms for the mid afternoon to early evening hours both Thursday and Friday. && .KEY MESSAGES... - 1) The current stretch of active summer weather continues through Friday, with mainly diurnally-driven showers and thunderstorms. Ongoing showers and thunderstorms this morning are tied to an upper level disturbance, which exits this afternoon. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms could be strong to severe, especially Thursday and Friday, with a cold front crossing Friday afternoon and night. Repetitive or training storms could prompt flash flooding, including early this morning. - 2) Very warm to hot and muggy conditions continue this week. Given the current extended stretch of very warm and humid weather, heat safety will be important, especially Thursday, which is likely to be the hottest day of this current stretch. - 3) The cold front that crosses Friday afternoon and night brings a break in the heat, humidity and the shower and thunderstorm activity this weekend. Systems bring active weather during the upcoming work week, but temperatures remain near seasonable levels, and the humidity remains manageable. && .DISCUSSION... KEY MESSAGE 1... Showers and thunderstorms entering, and forming in, the middle Ohio Valley early this morning, were tied to a mid/upper-level short wave trough, which exits this afternoon. Thunderstorms this morning will continue to have the potential for heavy downpours given precipitable water values peaking in the 2-2.25 inch range, as well as strong wind gusts within the heavy downbursts, and pockets of modest shear through 8 km associated with the short wave. The Weather Prediction Center continues their Marginal Risk for Excessive Rainfall for southwestern portions of the forecast area Tuesday for today where the lead outflow boundary and trailing boundary laid down by a weakening convective complex can focus the heaviest and most numerous cells this morning. They have also added a Marginal Risk area in northeast WV, the tail end of a larger area over the northeastern U.S. with the exiting short wave trough. The Weather Prediction Center has also issued a Mesoscale Precipitation Discussion for southern portions of the forecast area through early this morning, citing the well-defined mid- level vort center advancing eastward across the lower Ohio Valley as evident on GOES-R imagery, and moisture and instability transport fed by the 40 kt nocturnal low level jet as evident on RLX VAD wind profile. Showers and thunderstorms end, or at least decreases in coverage, from west to east this afternoon as the system exits. However, as the clouds scatter out this afternoon, heating could allow additional thunderstorms to pop up. Coverage is expected to be scattered at most, but any storms that do pop up can produce stronger wind gusts, and the Storm Prediction Center keeps the northeast half of the forecast area within the southern extent of a Marginal Severe Thunderstorm Risk area, for a damaging wind threat. This is where CAPE, and shear through 8 km, are forecast to be higher, and where CAMs suggest development. A mid/upper-level ridge crosses Wednesday night through Thursday night, but with embedded flat waves, most notably Thursday afternoon. Models continue to advertise high CAPE, 3-4 KJ/kg, Thursday afternoon, amid a very warm and moist environment that features h85 temperatures near 20 C, h850 theta e values as high as 350 K, PW values of around 1.75 inches and surface dew points potentially in the low to mid 70s. While shear will be weak, the juicy, very unstable air couple with the flat wave could support robust storms capable of heavy rainfall which could lead to locally strong to severe microbursts, as well as high rainfall rates. The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded the Marginal Risk for Severe Thunderstorms Thursday to a Slight Risk for almost all of WV, with a Marginal Risk for the remainder of the area. With the high diurnally driven CAPE, and the afternoon timing of the flat wave, probably also diurnally induced, the Strong to Severe Thunderstorm threat Thursday is strongly tied to diurnal heating. Isolated damaging wind gusts, localized flash flooding and hail are all possible with stronger cores from mid afternoon into the early evening hours Thursday. Broad long wave troughing sets up over the center of the continent during the latter portion of the work week, easing eastward to the central to eastern portion of the continent this weekend. The ridging gives way to lead next mid/upper-level short wave trough as the long wave trough eases east Thursday night through Friday, pushing a surface cold front toward the area. Adding synoptic-scale forcing and modest shear to the very moist and unstable air mass only solidifies the Severe Thunderstorm and Flash Flood threats for Friday afternoon and early evening, The Storm Prediction Center has a Slight Risk for Severe Thunderstorms for the area Friday, while the Weather Prediction Center continues the Marginal Risk for Excessive Rainfall they has been carrying for the forecast area, in a long ribbon all along and ahead of the approaching cold front, for the Appalachians and Ohio Valley, and then back westward through the south-central Plains States. KEY MESSAGE 2... With mid/upper-level heights rebuilding in the wake of the short wave exiting today, above average temperatures return, to go along with the persistent high humidity of late, with lowland highs in the upper 80s to low 90s Thursday and Friday, and lowland dew points and overnight lows in the upper 60s to mid 70s through Friday. A relative lull in shower and thunderstorm Thursday allows it to be the hottest day of the week. Lowland highs in the low 90s, together with dew points in the low to mid 70s, will drive heat indices to close to 100 degrees F for a time Thursday afternoon. This may eventually warrant Heat Advisories for portions of the lowlands for Thursday afternoon. Heat and humidity will be high again ahead of the cold front on Friday, with at least eastern portions of the lowlands, nearest the mountains, again flirting with Heat indices near 100 degrees F. The cold front finally breaks the heat for this weekend and into the upcoming work week. Global Ensemble-based probabilities of high temperatures exceeding 90 degrees F are very low today, but then range up to 50 percent Thursday, before dropping back some on Friday. However, h85 temperatures as high as 20 C Thursday can support lowland highs as high as 95. On the other hand, HREF probabilities of hourly apparent temperatures reaching or exceeding 100 F are near 0. Global Ensemble-based probabilities of high temperatures of 90 are slim to none this weekend and the beginning of the upcoming work week. KEY MESSAGE 3... The cold front crossing the area Friday afternoon and night, driven by the forward progress of the long wave trough into the eastern U.S., brings the promise of dry weather Saturday, complete with lower dew points, breaking the ad nauseum of active summer weather. However, the active portion of the pattern returns, as another mid/upper-level short wave trough backs the mid/upper-level flow as it approaches early next week. A weaker short wave trough ahead of it could bring the return of unsettled weather as early as Sunday afternoon, before the main short wave drives another surface cold front into the area early in the next work week. It may take until midweek for a more amplified mid/upper-level short wave trough to drive the cold front cleanly through the area. In the mean time, the wavy front maintains active weather with showers and mainly afternoon and evening thunderstorms. && .AVIATION /09Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... Thunderstorms today are more likely this morning, rather than this afternoon like one would normally expect. Showers and thunderstorms in the area early this morning could impact TAF sites throughout morning, even into early this afternoon at BKW, CKB and EKN. Have continued VCTS/CB with the chance for MVFR conditions in rain at all sites, except chance TSRA at HTS and CRW. A direct hit of any thunderstorm today could drop flight categories down to IFR or lower. The morning timing is tied to a weak upper level disturbance, which exits the area this afternoon. However, the clouds will scatter out by the early to mid afternoon, with VFR returning area-wide. This will allow heating this afternoon, and additional thunderstorms could pop up. Anticipated coverage is too low to include in TAFs for later this afternoon, but any storms that do pop up can produce stronger wind gusts, and PKB, CKB and EKN remain within the southern extent of a Marginal Severe Thunderstorm Risk area from the Storm Prediction Center for a damaging wind threat. Sunset and upper-level ridging will allow for a VFR night tonight. Light south to southwest surface flow early this morning will become gusty southwest later this morning, to 15 to20 kts outside thunderstorms, and than light southwest later this afternoon. 49 thunderstorm wind, 3 flash flood, 1 hail. Local standard time, as filed.
High water was observed along Route 34 at the intersection of Clubhouse Lane near Liberty Square. In Hurricane, high water occurred along portions of Harbour Lane where Hurricane Creek spilled out of its banks.
High water issues arose on the interstate as water toppled down from the hill above and caused a mudslide at the I-64 Oakwood Road interchange by downtown Charleston. In Kanawha City, high water was also observed on 41st and 42nd Streets.
Portions of Ten Mile Creek rose out of its banks and flooded Ten Mile Creek Road. North of Minerva, portions of Four Mile Creek spilled out of its banks and flooded Four Mile Creek Road.
Power lines were blown down along Rock Camp Road.
A downed tree was observed at the intersection of Stull Hill Road and Mountain Drive.
A tree was blown down along Sunnyside Road in the Duckworth township.
One downed tree was observed at the intersection of Nutter Fork Road and Chips Run.
Outside of West Union, a tree was blown down onto Bulltown Road.
Multiple trees were blown down in the West Milford area.
In Philippi, a tree was blown down onto a house near Lander Road.
A tree blew down onto a house along McClellan Road.
