What happened

The episode as NWS ALY wrote it up.

A highly anticipated, highly impactful Nor'easter struck southern Vermont on the evening of Sunday, February 22 through the afternoon of Monday, February 23, 2026. Tracking along the East Coast and rapidly intensifying as it approached the 40 latitude/70 longitude benchmark, this system quickly gained national attention not only for its projected widespread blizzard conditions across many high profile, highly populated areas, but for the complexity of its forecast.

The forecast for this system was a very complicated one. Model guidance in the days leading up to the event was highly variable in their depictions of the track and strength of the system. Ultimately, the track of the storm remained farther south and east than what was anticipated, leading to a fairly steep south to north gradient in snowfall totals. This also led to much lower snowfall totals across southern Vermont than what were initially anticipated. The highest snowfall totals were recorded across the highest elevations of the southern Green Mountains where about 7-9 inches were recorded. Across lower elevations, only 0.5 to isolated amounts of 6 inches were reported. And while blizzard conditions were not a threat across this region, gusty winds did reduce visibility at times, making travel particularly difficult when combined with snow covered roadways.

Key Impacts: road closures, traffic accidents, school closures.
