What happened

The episode as NWS SHV wrote it up.

A northwest flow aloft was in place across the Four State Region during the morning of May 10th, developing on the east side of an upper level ridge of high pressure over the Rockies and Desert Southwest. A shortwave trough embedded in this flow regime traversed the Oklahoma/Texas Panhandle during the early morning hours, before moving into East Texas by late morning and North Louisiana during the afternoon. Diurnal heating contributed to an unstable air mass by late morning/early afternoon, with the approaching trough helping to enhance large scale forcing for the development of scattered severe thunderstorms across portions of East Texas and North Louisiana, where multiple reports of large hail and damaging winds were received. These storms eventually exited the region by late afternoon with the departure of this disturbance aloft.

A shortwave trough will move southeast out of New Mexico this
afternoon, eventually pushing through the ArkLaTex late this
evening. The upper-trough will phase with a surface boundary
across central Texas this afternoon. A moist surface airmass along
and east of the frontal boundary along with ample daytime heating
will further aid in destabilizing the environment with lapse
rates forecast to steepen areawide. Thunderstorms are forecast to
develop along the front at the time of peak heating across Texas
and begin shifting eastward toward the ArkLaTex through this
evening. Models generally agree that a bowing convective complex
could be pushing into east and northeast Texas late in the evening
with severe weather possible. Hail and damaging winds will be the
highest threats along with an isolated tornado threat. However,
outflow boundaries resulting from ongoing convection across north
Texas could stabilize the atmosphere enough across portions of
northeast Texas, southeast Oklahoma and portions south Arkansas to
mitigate a widespread organized severe weather risk prompting SPC
to remove these areas from the Day 1 slight risk outlook.

Severe threat to wane overnight with lingering showers and
isolated thunderstorms possible through mid-morning Monday as the
upper-trough finally translates east across the region.
Conditions to improve through Monday afternoon with upper-level
northerly flow becoming established across the Southern Plains.

Cool surface high pressure expected to build areawide on Monday
with afternoon high temperatures in the mid 70s. Overnight low
temperatures Monday night are forecast to average in the 50s.
Otherwise, upper-level ridge to build across the region allowing
for a warming trend with high temperatures late in the workweek
approaching 90 degrees in some areas. /05/

MVFR cigs persist across portions of Deep E TX, NCNtrl LA, and Srn
AR as of this midday, but otherwise, VFR conditions are expected
over much of the region this afternoon, with the cu field expected
to develop/spread farther NNW across E TX/NW LA/SW AR through the
day. A band of convection NW of TYR is expected to continue
traversing SE into the Wrn sections of E TX, and may produce small
hail, locally gusty winds in excess of 30kts, MVFR cigs, and
reduced vsbys as it affects TYR/GGG between 19-21Z, and possibly
LFK by late afternoon (should it hold together). Farther E,
convection may be more isolated to widely scattered by mid and
late afternoon over Srn AR/N LA, with low confidence precluding
thunder mention attm. More organized convection is expected to
develop farther W by mid and late afternoon over WCntrl and N TX,
which will slide SE through N and Cntrl TX this evening, possibly
expanding into portions of E TX/Wrn LA. Have maintained thunder
mention this evening through a part of the overnight hours for the
E TX/SHV terminals, which may scour the air mass enough to
temporarily delay low cig development. Thunder may be more
isolated farther E at ELD/MLU late, with low MVFR cigs expected to
eventually develop in wake of the convection behind a cold front
that will shift SSE through the area. Cigs should eventually
become IFR by/shortly after daybreak Monday, with areas of -SHRA
persisting in wake of the fropa during the morning, before
diminishing during the afternoon. Cigs should also gradually
improve from N to S by late morning/mid afternoon Monday as well.
SSE winds 5-10kts to start the TAF period will become more VRB by
mid/late afternoon, except higher gusts in/near the convection
over E TX. Winds will become generally N around 5kts after 00Z
behind the front. /15/
