A winter storm brought sleet/snow to much of west central Texas. Some freezing rain resulted in a light glaze of ice across the Northwest Hill Country. The snow/sleet amounts ranged from 1 to 4 inches across the northern 2/3 of the area. The winter storm caused disruptions to travel and one fatality due to an accident on Interstate 10 east of Junction.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Angelo TX 547 PM CST Fri Jan 23 2026 ...New AVIATION... .KEY MESSAGES... - Much colder temperatures expected this weekend due to an arctic airmass, along with a medium to high chance for an icy wintry mix of precipitation. - Potential winter weather impacts include dangerous travel conditions, weather related power outages, and harm to people, animals, and outdoor vegetation. - Medium to high chance for single digit temperatures Saturday night and Sunday night with wind chills near or below zero. - An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect from Saturday evening through Monday morning. - A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 6 PM today to 6 PM CST Sunday. && .SHORT TERM... (This evening through Saturday) Issued at 112 PM CST Fri Jan 23 2026 The forecast remains on track for a strong cold front and very cold arctic airmass to overtake the region through this weekend, bringing a mix of wintery precipitation to the area through much of the weekend. As for precipitation, continued showers and a few general thunderstorms are expected across the area through this evening, with the wintery mix of sleet, freezing rain, and snow becoming the focus for impacts tonight into Sunday. There remains some uncertainty with regards to which precipitation type will be most predominant over certain areas. However, recent model soundings show an extensive warm nose aloft and a fairly deep cold layer below that, which would signify a higher potential for sleet with this system. Given this uncertainty, we continued to message the mixture of sleet, freezing rain, and snow through a Winter Storm Warning that is in effect from 6pm CT this evening through 6PM Sunday. With regards to the winds and temperatures, winds have shifted to northerly behind the front across much of the area so far, with near freezing temperatures starting to intrude on the Big Country in the wake of this strong cold front. Winds are expected to become mildly gusty with this frontal system today, and remain mildly breezy through the weekend. The main concern with regards to these lingering breezy winds will be the dangerous wind chills those winds are expected to bring to the area, with the temperatures plummeting over the weekend and into early next week. We are expecting overnight lows tonight to quickly fall into the low teens to low 20s, and in the low to mid 20s specifically along the I-10 corridor tonight into Saturday morning. High temperatures on Saturday struggle to make it out of the upper teens to upper 20s across much of the area, and in the upper 20s to lower 30s along the I-10 corridor. With overnight lows Saturday evening into Sunday morning ranging in the single digits to low teens, and northerly winds from 10 to 15 mph with some higher gusts, we are expecting wind chill values to drop as low as the lower single digits to as low as -10 degrees on Sunday morning. A Extreme Cold Warning is in effect from Saturday evening through noon Monday for these dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills. (Saturday night through next Friday) Issued at 226 PM CST Fri Jan 23 2026 Saturday night will see a continuation of the extremely cold temperatures and a wintry mix of precipitation across the region. In fact, the highest odds of seeing some snow are on Saturday night as the cold air fully sets in supporting a transition towards snow. Freezing rain and sleet are still likely (70-90% chance) across the area as well, which will be the main cause of significant impacts. Expect roads and bridges to create hazardous travel conditions area wide. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 6 PM CST on Sunday. Furthermore, wind chills are still forecast to be in the 5 to -12 degree range on Saturday night and Sunday night. The Extreme Cold Warning will remain in effect through noon on Monday. In fact, high temperatures will remain below freezing through the day on Monday for most locations. This means that any accumulations that do occur will not see substantial improvement until we climb to above freezing again. The best window for improved conditions is on Tuesday, which is when we should see highs back to around 40-45 degrees. && .AVIATION... A strong arctic cold front has recently moved through the KSJT and KBBD terminals and will move south across KJCT and KSOA by 01Z. Gusty north winds will follow the front, with gusts around 25 knots through the overnight hours. IFR/LIFR conditions will prevail the next 24 hours, with low ceilings and reductions to visibility. Freezing rain and some sleet will overspread the terminals this evening and persist into tomorrow.
