What happened

The episode as NWS CRP wrote it up.

Across South Texas and the Coastal Bend, persistent dry conditions through late January led to worsening drought and critically low soil moisture, limiting agricultural progress and stressing rangeland. Periods of unseasonably warm weather were followed by hard freezes and a winter storm, though precipitation was generally limited, with only modest rainfall of up to around an inch in parts of the Coastal Bend providing minor short-term improvement to soil moisture. Producers largely completed field preparation but delayed spring planting due to insufficient moisture for germination. Winter pastures and forage growth struggled under the dry conditions, resulting in poor to fair range conditions and increased reliance on hay and supplemental feed for livestock. While citrus and cool-season vegetable harvests continued, drought stress remained a concern for crop development and pasture recovery, and additional rainfall will be needed to improve soil moisture and support the upcoming planting season.

.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 1148 PM CST Wed Dec 31 2025

A dryline is forecast to move east across S TX during the day Friday
leading to dry and hot conditions to the west of the dryline. Record
high temperatures are possible with highs in the mid to upper 80s
across most of S TX. There is some uncertainty how far east the
dryline gets before the sea breeze pushes it back inland, which will
make forecasting highs along the coast a bit tricky. Late Friday
night into Saturday, a cold front is expected to move through S TX
bringing slightly cooler temperatures Saturday night and Sunday.
However, temps will remain above normal behind the cold front with
temps warming up once again through early next week. Precip is not
anticipated through the period.

Areas of fog, possibly dense with visibilities 1/2SM or less, may
develop Thursday night, mainly across the eastern portions of S TX.
Fog will be possible again Friday night ahead of the cold front, but
is expected to be more confined to the coastal areas. Sea fog will
also be likely due to dewpoints increasing to the upper 60s to
around 70 moving across the coastal waters with sea surface temps in
the low to mid 60s.

.AVIATION...
(06Z TAFS)
Issued at 1148 PM CST Wed Dec 31 2025

A quiet aviation period with VFR conditions throughout. High
clouds will continue through the period. Late in the period we
could stat to see some low clouds mainly at VCT and CRP, then
after the end of the period for ALI. There is a small chance a few
low clouds could develop around ALI for Thursday morning, but
think this is not very likely and have not included in TAF at
this time.

&&

.MARINE...
Issued at 1148 PM CST Wed Dec 31 2025

Gentle (BF 3)southerly breeze Thursday is expected to strengthen to
a fresh (BF 5) breeze Thursday night and continues through Friday
night ahead of a cold front. Winds weaken as the cold front
approaches the coastal waters. Behind the front on Saturday, a
gentle to moderate offshore flow is expected, then onshore flow
returns Sunday. Areas of sea fog will be possible Thursday night
through Friday night.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 1148 PM CST Wed Dec 31 2025

A dry line followed by a cold front will drop RH values below 30%
across inland portions of the Coastal Plains and Brush Country
Friday and Saturday. However, light winds and ERC values in the 50-
75th percentile should negate fire weather concerns. Expect slightly
more humid conditions to return late weekend into early next week.
