Dry conditions through the winter and early spring have led to severe drought conditions (D-2) across portions of central South Dakota.
The Gann Valley COOP observer in Buffalo County recorded only 0.74 inches of moisture over the last three months: 0.13 inches in January, 0.1 inches in February and 0.51 inches in March.
In Lyman county, the Kennebec observer recorded a total of 0.62 inches for the same period, 0.23 inches in January, a trace in February and 0.39 inches in March. Additionally, average temperatures in Kennebec were significantly above normal: 4.7 degrees above in January, 12.5 degrees above in February, and 11.4 degrees above in March.
