- Dangerous fire weather continues this afternoon mainly west of
the Pecos, while hazardous winds impact portions of Culberson
and Eddy counties, including the Guadalupe Mountains through
this evening.
- A weather system passes over our region this weekend. Much
cooler temperatures are expected across the area with a low
(20-40%) chance of light precipitation for northern portions of
the area Saturday through Saturday night.
- Warmer temperatures with periods of gusty westerly winds are
anticipated through much of next week.

Another cold front moves through the area tonight into tomorrow
morning as the upper-level system begins to make its way across the
area. This, coupled with clear skies, will help keep temperatures
cooler that last night, especially for locations in southeast New
Mexico and the Permian Basin. Lows for much of the area will be in
the upper 30s to mid 40s, with some near-freezing temperatures
expected in northern Lea County and in the mountains.
Northwesterly/northerly winds tomorrow will allow cold air to
continue to filter into the region. As a result of this, highs
tomorrow will generally top out in the 50s and 60s, with even some
40s farther north where cloud coverage will be greater. Meanwhile,
rain chances will enter the picture Saturday morning through the
afternoon across southeast New Mexico and the northern Permian
Basin. However, these chances will be fairly low-end (20-40%), and
rainfall totals will be light (a couple of hundredths at best) due
to a general lack of good moisture in the lowest levels/surface (40-
60% RH at best at the surface by Saturday afternoon into the
evening). Farther south, fire weather concerns will persist in the
Lower Trans-Pecos and Big Bend as winds remain elevated there and
very dry conditions continue.
The cooler temperatures persist into Sunday morning as another
reinforcing front moves through. Many locations will end up
bottoming out near or below freezing (locations along the Rio Grande
and in the Lower Trans-Pecos will remain near 40F). The cool-down is
short-lived however, as a warm-up begins moving into the long-term
period.

An upper-level low and associated positively tilted trough will
cross the ArkLaTex region on Sunday. A dry northerly flow pattern
aloft will develop across much of west Texas and southeast New
Mexico behind this feature through Sunday afternoon. Surface high
pressure will also build over our region through the day Sunday
and we expect sunny skies to be prevalent with high temperatures
trending a little warmer over most of our area with readings
mostly in the 60s. Clear skies continue on Sunday night with lows
mostly in the 30s, except lower 40s along portions of the Big
Bend.
Shortwave ridging aloft will build over much of our region on
Monday, while surface lee troughing also develops from eastern New
Mexico into southwest Texas. Sunny skies and dry conditions will
continue into Monday, with temperatures warming into the 70s over
much of the area. Southwesterly flow aloft will spread into our
forecast area on Tuesday in advance of the next upper-level trough
that will be moving into the Desert Southwest and northern Baja.
Low level thermal ridging will continue to enhance over our region
along the persistent surface trough axis with highs continuing to
trend a little warmer into the mid 70s to mid 80s over much of the
area. Breezy westerly to southwesterly winds will likely develop
over the Guadalupe Mountains and southeast New Mexico Plains by
Tuesday afternoon. The upper-level trough will quickly move across
our forecast area on Wednesday and a belt of stronger mid-level
winds along the base of this system will bring windy conditions to
much of our region on Wednesday afternoon. Ridging aloft may
return on Thursday before a much more vigorous storm system
potentially brings much stronger winds to our area to end out the
week. Temperatures look to remain above normal through Thursday.
