Tomorrow starts March and right on que we will have breezy to
windy start to the month. An approaching upper level storm system
will bring breezy to windy conditions to the area on Saturday
afternoon. The system is not the best timed to give us wide spread
windy conditions, so it looks like it will be windy for locations
west of the Rio Grande on Saturday and then the windy conditions
will shift east of the Rio Grande on Sunday. By Sunday evening the
first short wave trough will be to our east and the next
(stronger) system will be moving in our direction. By Monday
afternoon the upper level trough will be near the Four Corners
region and at the surface we will have a decent lee side trough
develop across southeast Colorado. Those factors will help set up
a windy day on Monday. We will likely (70 to 80) see at least wind
advisory level winds (30 to 40 mph) Monday afternoon. The breezy
winds will continue into Tuesday, but then a little less winds on
Wednesday and Thursday.
Looking at temperatures, we will see highs on Saturday through
Monday 5 to 10 degrees above average. For Tuesday our highs will
be a few degrees below average and then right near average to
finish out next week.

VFR conditions will persist through forecast period. A band
of high clouds FEW250 currently over SW AZ will move over the
Borderland in the overnight and early hours of Saturday. Light
and variable winds will prevail through the overnight into the
early morning hours. Winds will pick up in the afternoon hours
with gusts over 20 kts in the afternoon, especially in areas west
of the Divide with patchy blowing dust briefly bringing visibilities
down to 1SM or less at times. Winds will become light after
sunset or around 02z Sunday.

We will see active fire weather conditions for Saturday, Sunday,
and Monday. We will be very dry on Saturday with min RH's a little
below 10% in the lowlands and ranging from 10 to 15% in area
mountains. We also will have gusty south to southwest winds. The
strongest winds will be west of the Continental Divide. We will
see Red Flag conditions for some of southwest New Mexico on
Saturday afternoon. We will see near critical fire weather
condition on Sunday, but then strong winds and critical fire
weather conditions return for Monday. We will a little less winds
on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

The month started with Extreme(D3) drought and by the end of March had Exceptional(D4) drought across the entire zone except a little Extreme(D3) drought over the far north.
The zone started out in Extreme(D3) drought with Exceptional(D4) drought moving into the southern half of the zone by the end of March. The El Paso Airport reported 0.04 inches of precipitation which was 0.20 inches below normal.
The entire zone started out in Extreme(D3) drought and by the end of March, Exceptional(D4) drought moved into all but the far northern portion of the zone.
Extreme(D3) drought covered the entire zone to start March and by the end of the month, Exceptional(D4) drought covered all but the far northern areas.
The western half of the zone started March in Extreme(D3) drought with Exceptional(D4) drought east. By the end of the month, Exceptional(D4) drought covered the entire zone.
The zone started in Extreme(D3) drought and transitioned to Exceptional(D4) drought by the end of the month. The Cooperative Observer in Tornillo reported a trace of precipitation which was 0.25 inches below normal.
