A major and historic multi-day severe weather event unfolded across Middle Tennessee during early April 2025. This event began during the afternoon hours of April 2nd and continued through April 6th.

A major and historic multi-day severe weather event unfolded across Middle Tennessee during early April 2025. This event began during the afternoon hours of April 2nd and continued through April 6th. These first couple rounds of thunderstorms brought damaging winds and large hail along with a tornado risk. The corridor from southwest Middle Tennessee into the Nashville metro area was hit particularly hard with multiple supercells training for several hours. Large hail was reported, particularly with the early thunderstorms, with hail sizes nearing three inches. A couple of tornadoes were also confirmed with the strongest being an EF-1 tornado in Wilson County. A brief break was received on April 4th, but the event ended with a potent line of thunderstorms sweeping east through the area April 5th and into the early morning hours of April 6th. This final round of thunderstorms brought a wide swath of damaging winds to several Middle Tennessee counties, including Perry, Humphreys, Dickson, Cheatham, Davidson, Sumner, Wilson, Macon, and Trousdale counties. Widespread 60-70 mph winds were common, however, embedded microbursts likely produced winds up to 90 mph in some spots. Before this line exited the area, it was responsible for producing one last EF-1 tornado in Grundy County.
These multiple rounds of thunderstorms were also responsible for widespread flooding and flash flooding. By the end of this event, highest rainfall totals were received across the northwest corner of Middle Tennessee and into the Nashville metro area where observations and radar estimates showed 6 to 12 inches of rain. Fortunately, the brief break in activity on April 4th likely prevented more significant flooding, but widespread reports of road closures and streams and creeks spilling out of banks were still received. River flooding was also a widespread issue with sixteen river gauges reaching minor flood stage and six river gauges reaching moderate flood stage.
Fortunately, no reports of injuries or fatalities were received over this prolonged severe weather event.

Updated at 1228 PM CDT Wed Apr 2 2025 - There is a level 4 out of 5 risk for severe storms tonight for many of our western counties with a level 3 out of 5 for Nashville Metro and surrounding areas. Storms are expected to begin moving in from the west late this evening, spreading across the northwest half of Middle Tennessee through the late night hours. Damaging winds, tornadoes, large hail, and torrential downpours will all be possible. Locations around and west of Linden, Waverly, Clarksville, and Dover are at greatest risk for strong, long track tornadoes late this evening. - Major flooding may develop for northwest Middle Tennessee with torrential rainfall at times from this evening through Sunday morning. Stewart, Montgomery, and Houston Counties are at greatest risk with 10 inches of rainfall possible. Nashville Metro could have more than 6 inches of rain. Flash flooding and eventually river flooding will be concerns across the northwest half of Middle Tennessee where a Flood Watch is in place. - There will be a continued risk for severe storms across the area Thursday through Saturday. The greatest risk will continue to be over the northwest half of Middle Tennessee with much lower storm chances over the southeast half. Damaging winds will be the main concern Thursday through Saturday, although tornadoes cannot be ruled out. && .SHORT TERM... (Rest of today through Thursday) Issued at 1222 PM CDT Wed Apr 2 2025 We are already feeling the effects of the incoming storm system with gusty winds over 40 mph. A tight pressure gradient ahead of an approaching front will keep the winds going strong through the rest of the day and on into tonight. These frequent 40 to 45 mph gusts could bring down some limbs and cause scattered power outages well before any thunderstorms arrive. Speaking of storms, there is a wide range of severe storm potential across the Mid State through tonight, ranging from level 1 out of 5 along the southern Plateau to level 4 out of 5 for many of our western counties. We have had a lot of uncertainty about how far the incoming storms would push into the Mid State as the main front stalls out well before reaching our area. The latest CAMs are in reasonable agreement with storms moving into our west counties toward 9 PM, then spreading eastward, eventually reaching as far east as a line from Livingston to Murfreesboro to Columbia and lawrenceburg. This means the far southeast area of Middle Tennessee may stay dry through the night. As the storms move into our area, All severe modes are possible including damaging winds to 70 mph, tornadoes, large hail, and torrential downpours with localized flash flooding. We will have cape values of 1000-2000 in place with deep layer shear of 40-50KT. As the evening hours approach, some backing and strengthening of low level winds will occur over our western counties resulting in enlarged, curving hodographs. 0-1km SRH values will jump up to 250-350 just before the storms arrive. This will maintain the potential for strong long-track tornadoes as the storm arrive. Over time as the storms spread across the northwest half of our area, the band will take on a more northeast to southwest orientation. Surface instability will decrease, and the main mode will shift more to multicell clusters with extremely heavy downpours and some training cells. This transition should bring a significant drop-off to the tornado potential, although not zero. Unfortunately it could bring some very heavy rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches with some localized flash flooding late tonight. By Thursday morning, the main front will be stalled along the Ohio Valley back to the ArkLaTex. There will continue to be scattered showers and storms in the warm and humid air south of the front. Activity will ramp up again in coverage and intensity late Thursday as another wave approaches. Once again the greatest coverage and risk will be over the northwest half of our area. Damaging winds and large hail be possible with a lower risk for tornadoes. More heavy rainfall will fall, especially for the northwest counties. && .LONG TERM... (Thursday Night through next Wednesday) Issued at 1044 AM CDT Wed Apr 2 2025 Once again Thursday evening looks pretty stormy for the northwest half of our area with pockets of heavy rain. By Friday morning, the main axis of rain and storms will shift north and west of our area. Storm-weary, water-logged areas may get a decent break in the action Friday through Friday night. This break will also allow temps to soar near record levels, with low to mid 80s for most areas. Unfortunately things will set up for a potentially destructive grand finale Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning with another round of severe thunderstorms and another batch of very heavy rainfall. This round of rain and storms is likely to impact the entire area, including our southeast counties which may be relatively quiet until Saturday night. By Saturday PM, the soil across northwest Middle Tennessee will be over-saturated, small streams will be running high and rivers will be rising. An additional 2 to 4 inches of rain will cover the entire area and locally higher amounts are possible. So Saturday PM through Sunday AM may be our time of greatest impact from flooding as well as another significant round of severe wx with all modes possible including tornadoes. Finally, the notorious stalled frontal boundary will kicked east of the area on Sunday, setting us up for a big change with cool and dry wx next week. In the Wedgewood neighborhood in south Nashville, multiple vehicles were stuck on Lester Avenue and Murfreesboro Pike. Flooding was also reported near Woodmont and Harding in Belle Meade where photos showed a townhome parking lot with water up to the top of car wheels. Area roads, such as Plunders Creek Road, Garner Creek Road, Beaver Creek Road, Pinewood Road, Mill Creek Road, and Pretty Creek Road, were affected.
Mill Creek at Nolensville crested to 14.32 feet which was minor flood stage. At this stage, water flooded low-lying areas along the creek, including portions of Culbertson Road east of Nolensville Pike as well as walking trails near the Honey Brook subdivision. Water also approached Bluff Road west of Nolensville Pike.

An EF-1 tornado touched down in Wilson County. This tornado began near Vesta Road just east of the Nashville Superspeedway, causing timber damage and minor structural damage. The tornado continued northeast, causing additional damage near Flatwoods Road and Murfreesboro Road. Some homes sustained minor damage, including fences and adjacent trees snapped. The tornado then crossed E Richmond Shop Road, continuing damage to trees and structures. Continuing northeast, the tornado crossed over Cedar Forest Road where notable timber damage was found using satellite imagery. Here, swaths of hardwoods were snapped and uprooted near Steeplechase Drive. Some homes sustained minor roof damage. The tornado continued northeast, crossing Chicken Road and SE Tater Peeler Road, continuing damage to trees with at least minor structure damage. The tornado continued northeast, crossing Cainsville Road and Sparta Pike, causing additional timber damage and damaging some farm structures. The tornado then dissipated near Shop Springs Road. At this stage, flooding impacted residential properties along Drummond Drive and the mobile home park on Philfre Court near Murfreesboro Pike. Flooding of property continued along Wimpole Drive, Curry Road, and at the intersection of Old Glenrose Avenue and Thompson Lane.

The Buffalo River near Lobelville crested to 15.88 feet which was minor flood stage. At this stage, flooding impacted agricultural land and properties along the river, including Dailey Loop, Caruthers Trace Lane, Lost Creek Road near Gilmer Bridge Road, and portions of the Buffalo River Country Club. Water covered Old State Highway 13 south of School House Road and Gilmer Bridge Road. Water also impacted waterfront properties off East 8th Avenue in Leeper Bottom and approached Cuba Landing Road and Squeeze Bottom Road.

Lawrence County EMA witnessed a tornado touch down in a plowed field between Old Waynesboro Highway and New Waynesboro Highway, four miles east of the Wayne/Lawrence County line. The Red River at Port Royal crested to 39.30 feet which was moderate flood stage and just below major flood stage at 40 feet. At this stage, significant flooding impacted agricultural land, parks, and access roads along the river, including the Red River Valley Park where several campsites were flooded. Port Royal Road near Highway 238 was also covered with water. Water approached Dunbar Cave Road just west of Warfield Boulevard, and water also reached low-lying portions of the Swan Lake Golf Course.

The Duck River near Hurricane Mills crested to 21.76 feet which was minor flood stage. At this stage, portions of Tumbling Creek Road east of Highway 13 were flooded to a depth of two feet.
The Cumberland River at Clarksville crested to 50.54 feet which was moderate flood stage. At this stage, most agricultural areas along the river were flooded as well as many industrial and commercial properties, Riverfront Park, and adjacent tributaries. Riverside Drive in Clarksville also began to flood near TN-48, Providence Boulevard, McClure Street, and Cumberland Drive. Also impacted were locations near Quarry Road, Kraft Street near College Street and Providence Boulevard, Zinc Plant Road, Salem Road, and Seven Mile Ferry Road. Water also approached athletic fields near Greenland Farms Drive and properties on Branch Road.
Heavy rain across Montgomery County resulted in widespread flash flooding, especially along waterways and across other low-lying areas. In Clarksville, 36 apartments had to be evacuated due to flooding at Dunlop Lane and Dalton Smith Court. By the end of this event, observations and radar estimated showed 8 to 11 inches of rain had fallen across Montgomery County. Extent of damages is unknown.

In southeast Nashville, Decatur Street and Willow Street were reported closed due to flooding. By the end of this event, observations and radar estimates showed 5 to 8 inches of rain had fallen across Davidson County. The Nashville ASOS measured 6.32 inches of rain. An EF-1 tornado first began near Interstate 40 near Buffalo, snapping and uprooting numerous trees. The tornado continued northeast along Highway 13, causing additional timber damage and damaging Overholt's Farm Market. It is believed to have dissipated in a heavily wooded area east of Highway 13 thereafter. Damages are a rough estimate.

An EF-1 tornado formed over northern Monteagle, first producing damage along Wrens Nest Road. The tornado moved east into Summerfield and continued along Highway 41 into Tracy City. The tornado then strengthened as it entered into Tracy City with significant tree damage observed along the path as well as some damage to structures noted at the tornado's peak. The stands of a ball field in Tracy City had its metal roofing completely removed and blown into various areas of the park. Other structure damage noted was a roof blown completely off of a home as well as numerous homes with roof damage caused by fallen trees. There was also damage to several farm outbuildings, some of which lost their roofs or were collapsed. The tornado lifted south of Tracy City with the final damage observed near King Road. At this stage, residences on Zapata Drive, Sawyer Farms Lane, Bluff View Drive, and Riverview Drive were impacted by flooding as well as U.S. Highway 70 near Highway 249, Walkup Road near Sawyer Farms Lane, Riverview Drive near Elkmore Drive, and Cedar Hill Road near Griffintown Road. Water also approached West Kingston Springs Road at Big Turnbull Creek.

Water also impacted waterfront properties off East 8th Avenue in Leeper Bottom and approached Cuba Landing Road and Squeeze Bottom Road.

The Duck River near Centerville crested to 25.17 feet which was moderate flood stage. At this stage, flood waters covered the soccer fields and bottomland along the river. Hickman Springs Road, Defeated Creek Road, and Leatherwood Road were impassable. Defeated Creek also flooded due to backwater from the Duck River.
Shoal Creek near Iron City crested to 15.29 feet which was minor flood stage. At this stage, low-lying and agricultural areas along the river were impacted as well as Iron City Park and the Sycamore Campground.
