.KEY MESSAGES...
* Gusty winds, rain and high elevation snow showers are expected
this weekend mainly from Highway 50 northward. Strongest wind
gusts expected today.
* Below average temperatures are expected this weekend, especially
Sunday when highs will be 15-20 degrees cooler than today.
* Warmer and drier conditions with mainly light winds return next
week.

.DISCUSSION...
Early morning radar depicts a swath of light rain draped across
Lassen County, moving eastward toward northwestern Nevada. This
development will continue as a trough sweeps across the Pacific
Northwest. Gusty winds, valley rains and high elevation snow are all
possible today, mostly north of US-50. This frontal passage will
bring cooler temperatures for the weekend, while next week a warmup
is shaping up.
Our first few drops have already fallen across northeastern
California, and by Sunday night we could see up to 0.75-1.00" of
liquid along the Donner Pass, which could mix in with some snow for
late Saturday into Sunday. Snow totals will be rather limited given
snow levels will rise later today to near 8500-9000 feet, before
falling to 7000-7500 feet by Sunday evening. The snow levels will
fluctuate between now and Sunday night, suggesting the precipitation
type will oscillate near those snow levels from rain to rain/snow
mix. The only locations that will see all snow for this event will
be above the 8500-9000 feet mark. Overall, snow amounts will be
light and generally less than an inch with the highest peaks
receiving up to 4 inches by Sunday night. As for showers across
western Nevada valleys, the spillover will be limited to the near
leeside foothills. There, liquid amounts will be 0.25-0.5", with
less than 0.1" spilling over into the Greater Reno-Carson City-
Minden region.
Gusty winds will be the more prominent feature of this system, with
ridge gusts today approaching 100 mph along the ridges. Gusts in the
valleys could reach 45 mph early this afternoon. Make certain to
secure outdoor holiday decorations today. Gusts will continue
Sunday, as the remnants of the current system work across the area.
Gusts will reach near 100 mph on the ridges, while valleys could see
gusts 50-55 mph. The Tahoe Basin will also see increased winds over
the open waters, which will introduce some choppy conditions.
Elsewhere, the risk for blowing dust will be present today into
Sunday for Basin and Range locations that lie downwind of desert
sinks and dry lake beds. Thus, we have issued a Wind Advisory for
Sunday in response to the increased strong wind threat south of I-80
within the Sierra and along the Sierra Front in western Nevada.
The trough will also drag down some cooler temperatures for the
weekend along with all the items detailed above. Today we will see
highs near seasonal averages, Sunday we will take around 5 degrees
off of today's high temperatures. Once we say hello to the new week,
we will say goodbye to the trough and it's cooler temperatures. next
week we will see temperatures rebounding to above average, with a
ridge allowing a drier air mass. HRICH

* Gusty southwest winds today will bring gusts of nearly 40 kt to
leeside terminals such as KRNO/KCXP/KMEV. Sierra ridges will see
gusts 80+ kts, which will introduce LLWS through the day. Sierra
terminals such as KTRK and KTVL may see intermittent periods of
terrain obscuration as bands of precipitation rotate through the
region.
* Sunday will bring similar results to area terminals, with gusty
winds, rain/snow showers and LLWS remaining. HRICH
