Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 234 PM PDT Sun May 11 2025 .SYNOPSIS...A weak disturbance will bring a chance of isolated thunderstorms to northeastern Elko County this afternoon and evening. Elevated winds are expected today and may persist into Monday across central Nevada. A low pressure system will impact the forecast area from Monday night through Wednesday afternoon, bringing periods of valley rain and mountain snow. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Monday night Current satellite imagery shows shows cumulus clouds developing across the forecast area. A weak disturbance embedded in southwest flow, combined with instability (100-200 J/kg) and sufficient moisture, is supporting isolated thunderstorms in northeastern Elko County this afternoon and evening. Primary hazards include gusty outflow winds up to 45 mph and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. Elsewhere, dry conditions will prevail with high temperatures ranging from the upper 70s to lower 80s and overnight lows in the upper 40s to lower 50s. A tightening pressure gradient between a ridge to the east and an approaching Pacific Northwest trough will produce elevated south to southwest winds of 25-35 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph. A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM PDT tonight. Impacts include areas of blowing dust and difficult travel, especially for high-profile vehicles. The Pacific Northwest trough will continue its progression through northern Nevada on Monday, bringing periods of valley rain and mountain snow to Humboldt and Elko Counties Monday night. High temperatures will range from the upper 60s to lower 70s, with overnight lows in the mid to upper 30s. Snow levels will lower to around 6,000 feet in northern Nevada in the morning and around 7,000 feet in central Nevada midday, eventually dropping to near 5,500-6,000 feet by Monday night. Weak instability may also spark isolated thunderstorms in northwestern Humboldt County Monday afternoon and evening. Elevated winds from the southwest to west are expected again across central Nevada. A Wind Advisory is in effect for most areas from 8 AM PDT to 10 PM PDT Monday. Impacts include areas of blowing dust and difficult travel, especially for high-profile vehicles. && .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Sunday Upper level troughing continues its passage across Nevada on Tuesday bringing cool temperatures and more showers. High temperatures on Tuesday will be mainly in the 50s with shower chances covering all but the southernmost part of the forecast area. Showers recede from most of the forecast area overnight but continue in Elko county until Wednesday evening. Warmer conditions for Wednesday as high temperatures reach into the 60s. Conditions continue to warm Thursday as a zonal flow pattern emerges. Temperatures will be in the upper 60s and low 70s. Dry conditions also persist. Friday will be a carbon copy of Thursday, with the exception of some isolated showers along the Idaho border (about a 25% chance). On Saturday, an upper level trough looks to form on top of Nevada. High temperatures continue to be in the 60s and 70s, but the trough will bring daytime showers to the eastern half of the forecast area. The trough continues east on Sunday, leaving slightly cooler temperatures in the 60s and some lingering showers in the eastern half of the area. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions and very strong winds through the next 24 hours. Wind gusts at least 30KT are expected at all sites this afternoon and blowing dust is expected at all sites except KTPH at this time. While visibility is expected to remain above VFR conditions at this time for all sites except KWMC, short-lived reductions due to blowing dust cannot be ruled out entirely. KWMC is experiencing reduced visibility and ceilings due to blowing dust that will likely continue until winds decrease this evening. && .FIRE WEATHER... A weak disturbance, combined with sufficient moisture and instability, is supporting isolated thunderstorms in northeastern Elko County this afternoon and evening. Elsewhere, elevated winds from the south to southwest are expected today and may persist into Monday across central Nevada. The first Wind Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM PDT Sunday.
