Damaging winds still the main threat, but hail and even a tornado can't be ruled out. - Widespread wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph today outside of storms. - Still warm, but beginning to "cool." Much cooler by Tuesday. && .SHORT TERM /THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/... Issued at 257 AM MDT Sun May 11 2025 Satellite and radar continue to show plenty of moisture streaming into Eastern Idaho early this morning. Wind gusts with these showers have finally calmed down, too, compared to the wide range of gusts from 50 to 70 mph that we saw with showers and storms yesterday. However, our severe weather is not finished! The latest update from the SPC has introduced a "Slight" risk for severe weather (level 2 of 5) in Eastern Idaho. Pocatello and Idaho Falls are included in this area. Today's set up is a bit different though, as we increase some of our severe weather ingredients, so to speak. Yesterday we saw very strong DCAPE values, very little shear, and modest CAPE values. A very typical set up that supports strong wind gusts and little else. Today, we see CAPE values closer to 1000 J/kg (decent for our area), 0-6 km shear of 30 to 50 kts, and steep 700-500 mb lapse rates around 8.5 to 9.0 C/km. We even see some helicity tracks in the HREF CAMs, too. All of this to say that it is more likely that we see at least a couple of supercells today. Therefore, damaging winds and hail will be the main threats with these storms, but a tornado or two can't be completely ruled out. It's certainly another day to be weather-aware, especially those of us along and east of the I-15 corridor, but also for those in the "Marginal" risk area throughout the rest of our CWA, too. Aside from some morning showers, look for thunderstorm activity to pick up around 1 PM and continue through about 9 PM. Storms today will be more likely to actually bring precipitation down to the surface, too, with the potential for a quick tenth of an inch or even a quarter inch of rain with some stronger storms. Outside of thunderstorms, it will still be warm today with highs in the 70s to low 80s in the eastern Magic Valley and Snake River Plain and breezy with widespread gusts of 30 to 40 mph. A few gusts of 40 to 45 mph will be possible around the Challis area and near Dubois. Stronger wind gusts up on ridge tops will be closer to 50 mph. Decided against a Lake Wind Advisory for American Falls reservoir, though we will not be too far from it with southwest winds around 15 mph this afternoon. Monday looks a little bit quieter and cooler with highs in the 60s and 70s. Our precipitation chances return Monday night into Tuesday as a cold front finally makes its move through Eastern Idaho. This will mean some more snow for the mountains and impacts should be minimal, but there's about a 20 percent chance we see an inch of snow up on Galena summit by Tuesday morning. && .LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... Issued at 257 AM MDT Sun May 11 2025 An active pattern will persist through the week, with ensemble guidance indicating a few different systems to impact the area during this time. We're still looking at a pronounced closed upper low to move overhead Tuesday/Wednesday, producing a couple of wet and unseasonably cool days. After experiencing record warmth at several sites yesterday, high temperatures will fall to roughly 10 degrees below average Tuesday/Wednesday. Snow levels have trended a little lower from 24 hours ago, now projected to dip to 6 to 6.5 kft. Thus higher elevations will see some accumulating snow from this cold spring storm, which the EPS Extreme Forecast Index (EFI) snowfall fields are highlighting particularly over the Eastern Highlands. NBM 72-hour mean snowfall amounts range from 2-10 inches above 7 kft, with probabilities of exceeding 6 inches still running above 50 percent for some of the highest ranges in the Central Mountains and Eastern Highlands. Ensemble clusters are in strong agreement showing the low shifting east by Thursday, with rising heights in its wake translating to rebounding temperatures Thursday and Friday. Even though we'll be in between organized systems Thursday and Friday, several weaker shortwave troughs look to ripple through a continued active west/northwest flow aloft, keeping daily precipitation chances (20-40 percent for most areas, locally higher in the Eastern Highlands Thursday) at play. Ensemble means from both the GEFS and EPS depict another trough digging southeast through the PacNW and Northern Great Basin next weekend, although ensemble clusters show significant differences in its amplitude. Nonetheless, the pattern looks to remain active into next weekend, with continuing precip potential and periods of breezy winds. && .AVIATION /18Z TAFS THROUGH 18Z MONDAY/... Issued at 1028 AM MDT Sun May 11 2025 Quite a bit of cloud cover and early showers/isolated storms around this morning. We have seen occasional lightning and gusts over 30kts in spots. This MAY actually hinder the potential for more widespread strong/severe storms later on. However, where we can get some sunshine...conditions will be supportive of some strong to severe thunderstorms through early evening. Strong wind gusts to around 50 kts and hail will be the primary threats with these storms. Thunderstorms should initiate around 19Z and linger until around 02-03Z. MVFR or lower CIGS/VSBYS may accompany the strongest storms, but VFR conditions should persist outside of any direct thunderstorm impacts.
