The next system on the 6th and 7th Tuesday featured light shower chances across portions of the eastern Sierra and increased east to northeast winds. The next system arrived late Monday as a backdoor cold front that slid south through the area. East to northeast winds behind the front caused upslope flow east of the Sierra crests into the 7th with a 20-30% chance for some light snow showers in the Tahoe Basin area southward into Mono and Mineral counties. The northeast flow from this system was the primary impact with wind gusts upwards of 80+ mph across Sierra ridgetops that brought impacts to backcountry recreation and aviation interests across the region.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 147 AM PST Wed Jan 8 2025 .SYNOPSIS... * Elevated east to northeast winds continue today and Thursday along the Sierra ridgetops. * An overall quiet pattern continues into next week aside from a weekend cool down as a dry front moves through the region. && .DISCUSSION... - Strong winds materialized throughout the higher elevations of the Sierra on Tuesday, with several stations reporting wind gusts upwards of 70-100 mph. For today, the upper level low over southern California will continue to track south as a ridge amplifies off the west coast. The upper level winds will slowly decrease today along with slackening pressure gradients. But, we can still expect elevated east to northeast winds in the high Sierra with gusts of 50-60 mph likely. Otherwise, it's a quiet weather day with seasonal temperatures. - The aforementioned ridge will shift east over the area on Thursday into Friday. With this is place, temperatures will continue an upward trend to seasonal readings for Thursday, and up to 10 degrees above average by Friday. We'll hold on to the elevated easterly winds (gusts to 50-60 mph) in the high Sierra Thursday, but winds will continue to subside throughout the area on Friday. As usual, with the ridge aloft, poor ventilation and stronger inversions will return through at least Saturday morning. - By Saturday, a shortwave trough (another inside-slider) will brush the area. Most this will do is lower temperatures back to seasonal readings as there is no moisture associated with this feature. Going into the start of next week, we will have a ridge parked in the eastern Pacific with long-wave troughing to our east. This places us in the center, possibly leaving us open to further upper lows dropping south.
